"Flying Raccoon Suit’s Bad Time Records debut treks through ska, jazz, punk, klezmer, thrash, metalcore, twinkly emo, reggae, indie rock, and more, usually with at least two or three of these in the same song, and all of it works. It’s a fun, catchy, danceable album that goes down a lot more smoothly than it might sound on paper, and these are meaningful songs that deal with widespread internal struggles in ways that are widely relatable. It’s music that impresses on a technical level and never forgets to connect on an emotional one." like... what? Sounds accurate for a glorified ska band. Also, their album came out in November and made the list -- wtf? Either way, I'm just happy to see Ashton Kutcher staying active. kutcherXbedard

Even as a kid first gettin into punk I couldn’t stand oi, never came around to it, do think it’s odd that it has gotten more popular again in the last couple years. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Oi! is a new thing for young kids who maybe weren’t subjected to it in their youth. Just some more tourists to donate money to the scene.

Scowl isn't an "industry plant" band.
What they did is use their own goodwill from the tight-knit nature of hardcore to move out of it and seek wider appeal; but that's not what "industry plant" has ever meant. Everyone speaks in canned regurgitated slogans they found on hardcore twitter, the birthplace of internet braindead slogans.
The first two Scowl EPs are still good either way.
I saw Zulu last night and they have great crowd energy and the kids sincerely fucking love them. I wasn't that moved by their record but then felt different once I saw them live, which I've done with dozens of bands. Hardcore is more fun when you go to shows and don't notice whether or not bands are name-dropped by some bug person getting paid $150 to write an article for Pitchfork.

Zulu isn't bad in a bubble but the praise they get set my expectations way too high for what is ultimately a paint-by-numbers sounding band.

scowl isn't an industry plant in the sense that they do have actual ties to the community but i have never seen a hardcore band say yes to corporations more at the cadence and volume that they have. a lot of bands / labels / promoters have worked with pbr, only one band did a promo photo shoot for pbr.

"For modern bands, however, the more influential precedents arrived later: Fugazi abandoning whatever hardcore remnants stabilized their early days for avant-garde rock on 1998’s End Hits, or Refused declaring their foray into techno beats and upright bass The Shape of Punk to Come that same year. Cave In foreshadowing their major label signing with the glossy radio rock of 2000’s Jupiter, or Blacklisted diving into brooding, experimental art-punk with 2009’s No One Deserves to Be Here More Than Me. Or even Baltimore’s Turnstile, the biggest hardcore crossover success of the last few years, exposing their love of feel-good grooves on 2018’s Time & Space and 2021’s Glow On. Propelled by artsy ambitions instead of dollar signs, those big swings connected—at times in spite of fanbases that craved more of the same." this writer hates hardcore. got it.

Agreed, which is why discussion goes better here when people form their own apinions and don't just make this r/hardcore for curmudgeons. It's bizarre how many people who don't even really care about hardcore anymore camp out in this thread to rage about articles that really no one else but them reads
