Total Control playing a set at the Sydney Opera House with orchestral accompaniment was probably the coolest more ambitious/artistic thing Iβve seen a current punk or punk-adjacent whatever band do in recent memory. Much cooler than whatever Turnstile or whoever else is hyped today. Edit: also, not a huge fan of Trash Talk or Ceremony, but you gotta be kidding me if you think Scowl is as legit as either of those bands. Or, shit, even Code Orange by a laaaaarge margin. One time when I was 15, Code Orange played my hometown and crashed at my parents' house, ate our food, used our bathrooms, etc. They had a large crew of people with them so there were like 10-15 people all over the place, on every single piece of open floorspace and furniture. I sent them all friend requests and the only one who accepted was the shirtless bassist, Joe. We talked about Masakari and Heartless for a while at my folks' house lol Definitely a terrible band but they 100% did their tenure and toured like savages for years yeah mliw slept on my college apartment floor right after witness came out in 2005. they told me their guarantee was $200 at that time. they were nice appreciative dudes back then

They hopped on a gig at a hole in the wall spot I did for some band on No Sleep that had a guarantee n shit like that because I got an email from a booking agent. Looked it up. Former Thieves??? I cannot remember what that band sounded like off the top of my head at all. I remember Reba being a pleasant person, I dunno if I talked much to anyone else but I think Jamie had their email. They came back and played Indianapolis several times and just kept getting bigger, which was kinda cool to watch but not my bag at all. Traded the 7β for dense nuggs of fat buds and someone stole the tape of theirs I had.

But MAN they should have stayed dead. Were you at that Asbury show where he basically told everyone that public policy has never affected anyone's lives, so we should all just stop caring about Trump?

They came through after Midnight in America came out and complained about the venue not allowing smoking the entire set. It kind of turned me off of them until I saw their "reunion" at TIHC.

Former Thieves played my HS band's first show in New Brunswick(the city I live and book shows in)in 2010. they sounded like typical '00s melodic HC kinda thing. Nice guys, they were friends with a couple people in town too. Not really my thing either though. Even as a 16 y/o they didn't leave too much of an impression on me.

I saw World Peace and Terror Cell Unit last night. The one local opening band I managed to catch was pretty good--reminded me a little bit of Dystopia and other Slap-A-Ham bands. The crowd was mostly younger people, though there were a couple of older heads (me included). It was a decent turnout for a Monday night.

Finally getting around to listening to that Exhibition LP that came out earlier this year and it's pretty sick. Heard almost nothing about it despite their being on Triple B.

thing in common between EVERY band mentioned last few pages is that they toured relentlessly - obviously timelines differ & context is vastly different
Scowl has played the PNW at least five times since 2019, that just isn't a thing most bands of any genre are willing to do
MG was immediately popping, covid reallllllly got their hype going and was parlayed perfectly into being on of the first bands back - people also undervalue how crazy RJC toured prior to that, ian def made inroads and had hella good will off that
it's mostly a case of right place right time for both bands, but they set themselves up to be in position to say yes when the questions came aimed their way
the convo on quality is valid but different, the turnstile wave that had been cooking since 2018 was always going to carry some other band(s) with it

Trash Talked toured in ways that almost no other punk / adjacent band ever has, would not be hyperbolic to say they prob averaged 200 shows a year between 2007-2009
while exposure like that is no duh critical, their peak was still only like 60% of where Turnstile is now

You write a demo, break up, and then start a βnewβ band that is almost all the same members but now you play a slightly different version of the same shit. You do this until you realize itβs not going to happen for you.
