They were supposed to sleep at my place one night back in the witness era and I called it off when the vocalist wouldnβt leave me alone the entire show. Kept asking dumb questions and whining about past experiences. Someone else from the band apologized at the end of the night. what kinda dumb questions? what thread count the sheets were? The basic stuff at first and then stuff like βdo you have black out curtains?β βHowβs your tap water?β βHow far do you live from your job?β βWhatβs your porch like?β Just really weird stuff. |

yeah no, Former Thieves did not sound like a melodic hardcore band, they were a prob too self-serious post-hardcore band that def tried to tour a lot. I was at that show too
insert quip about how if Scowl were fronted by some mediocre bro or a person of color, or even gasp a trans person the majority of all this criticism wouldn't be thrown at them. double standards always apply. whining on twitter always backfires. I guess I'm privileged enough to not feel like every thought and feeling I have about a band I don't like needs to be heaved back and forth on Al Gore's internet. Scowl isn't good, but I'm very happy that my friend is getting to have fun doing what they want and will hopefully make a lot of money from it when the band inevitably implodes

I know they aren't everybody's favorite teacup, but I think it's cool that Gel has more monthly (spotify) listeners than Scowl, yet has not changed their sound. Maybe Scowl fans only listen on Tidal? this rocks. very impressive |

The fact that they were still touring and hitting New Brunswick/NJ as often and as late into their "fame" as they did always garnered mad respect from me. But MAN they should have stayed dead. Were you at that Asbury show where he basically told everyone that public policy has never affected anyone's lives, so we should all just stop caring about Trump? was so cool when he told us all how much we sucked and how boring we were for not moving around either. wasn't krimewatch one of the openers too lol This sort of thing annoys me more than it should. Insulting the crowd is not going to make the crowd want to like you. I think its especially sad when american bands do it and then go "Europe sucks" afterwards.. oh yeah? Nah mate.. its your band that noone cares about. |

Yeah Saltys was Paul's Tavern at the time, this was in 2016. It was a benefit for that kid Bobby Jay who passed away. The place was packed out. Tear it Up also played, I stage dove for them three times.
That was a really special gig. It was really emotional and the whole room was real with each other. My pops passed around then, and I felt like this show helped me cope with it. I have this friend whose elder sister dated a guy in an HC band so he got to see MLIW a ton in basements, churches, etc., when we were in 8th grade. That Belmar MLIW/Tear it Up show felt like seeing both those bands back in the day.
That House of Independents show was only like 2 years after that. They pull up, he's dressed like your average weirdo who just moved to NYC and hangs out in Washington Square Park all day in dumb outfits for attention seeking purposes. I think he had a leopard print bowler hat on?
That venue is too big in general if you ask me. I've only seen it packed out for HC gigs a handful of times, that too mostly after COVID lockdown HC scene explosion. But I fucking hate that place anyway. Owner financed it through their grandfather's company who is a major Asbury developer responsible for gentrification and has donated six figures to anti-LGBT hate groups and shit. Beers are like 10 bucks too.
