Pinball is sick but I’m bad at it. How tf do you get the ball to not go directly in the middle of the paddles?

I have a Hercules “worlds largest” pinball machine. I remember playing it at Hershey park as a kid in this big shed of old games. I ended up it finding one in carlisle pa at a car show swapmeet with my dad 20 years ago.

Trying to wrap my head around what’s happening here. Does this involve humping the machine?

(but really what you do is quickly take one hand off the machine, then slap the machine while hitting the flipper button so that the machine nudges over far enough to hit the ball)

funny enough, that's how you'd play the original pinball machines before the flippers were invented. nudging is still a big part, and once you get good at that it's a lot easier to prevent the ball from going down the middle
as far as "how much can you push it" goes, there's a tilt bob inside that basically measures how hard it's being slapped around, which will trigger dangers/tilts. depending on what the settings are, you can get away with doing death saves and other crazy shit. I've def had my fingers smashed playing next to people who do that shit hah

Used to hit the arcade for pinball DAILY my senior year of high school. Local arcade only had one table but it rotated often enough. wen't through Rollergames, Funhouse (still my all-time favorite), and Adams Family that I can remember that year. College student union had a Terminator 2 machine and that table took A LOT of my money my first two years. I don't play too often anymore but I've been meaning to start goingt to the Electro Magnetic Museum in Pawtucket more often to fix that.

Tilt sounds like the name of a band that would have a 14 page thread about it

ended up pulling the trig on a pile of the williams games on pinball fx, since they're all on sale right now.
i know it is not a real life replacement, but i had some fun. even set up my monitor vertically, which really does add to the experience.
i can't speak on any of the fake/made up games on it (dozens of star wars, marvel, etc), but gems like black rose and junkyard are dope af to me.

wen't to the pinball hall of fame in Vegas last week, it was sick. Honestly the lone highlight of the trip. They had tons of rare games from the 50’s - present day (nightmare on elm street and Elvira were both broken though and someone was hogging Austin Powers). Recommended if you’re in the area, it’s free to get in.
Our Uber driver’s dad used to work at Bally’s in the 80’s and said the designers were all idiots which was surprising.

yeah i love the hall of fame so much.
i can see why some more hardcore pinball dudes have a beef with it/all the busted games.
that's also a wild coincidence with the uber driver. i do wonder what it would be like to work at a pinball company in the 80s-90s.

Love the Sopranos machine "WHERES DA FREAKIN MONEY?"
There's that huge arcade in NH I used to to as a kid and would go nuts on the Star Wars machine. I like a lot of the classic 40's ones. They tilt so easy though.

What's the point of a pinball hall of fame if the machines are broken.
