The 1/5 on Sufjan Stevens Illinois breaks my heart a little. I definitely get why because he's very sappy and indulgent but that record left a huge impression on my middle school Pitchfork baby hipster self! It was the first time I'd heard a concept album that wasn't some 60s rock opera type thing and I thought it was so cool. Day 51 - John Zorn (Spy Vs. Spy: The Music Of Ornette Coleman) 4/5 - Cool guys doing cool guy shit I would definitely blow young John Zorn 👍 Day 52 - The Dictators (Go Girl Crazy) 5/5 - All killer no filler. Very dumb, snarky, sarcastic, camp, danceable: everything that punk music should be Day 53 - John Lennon (John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band) 3/5 - First three songs really made me think I would hate this because god John Lennon can be really fucking whiny but Working Class Hero is such a masterpiece of a song. I guess John Lennon is at his best when he's trying to sound like someone else because I love how Bob Dylan/Nick Drake that song is so much, it's incredible. And after that it picks up a bit and starts to sound more like a Beatles record, and I like the Beatles. I definitely don't regret listening to it, but it's also pretty forgettable too, save three tracks -- one of which left a huge impression on me, so there's that. Day 54 - Jurassic 5 (Power In Numbers) 5/5 - Is this considered kinda corny now or a classic? Or both? I guess lyrical miracle rap and also just being sincere in general isn't that cool in 2024 (it wasn't very cool in 2002 either) but it really doesn't make Jurassic 5 any less good. "I Am Somebody" is very annoying and a skip but it's ok still a 5 for everything else Day 55 - Miriam Makeba (s/t) 3/5 - Beautiful voice with a ton of range, doubt that it's something I'll realistically revisit. But I learned more about South African history through googling who she is, that counts for something. I also didn't realize she was the wife of Kwame Ture. Anyway, none of that has to do with the music -- I guess I'll file it under "glad I listened, but unlikely I will again" Day 56 - Bob Dylan (Blonde On Blonde) 2/5 - Very monotonous and just not for me. I really should give Blonde on Blonde a 1/5 but I am going to give it a 2 because I didn't actually like any of the songs but I do like the cadence of Bob Dylan's weird grating voice and his lyricism. Day 57 - The Pogues (If I Should Fall From Grace With God) 1/5 - No. Day 58 - Scatt Walker (Scatt 2) 5/5 - I actually love this so much. I was not prepared to like this at ALL. So melancholic, debaucherous, lustful, old-fashioned. Jacques Brel meets Frank Sinatra? I listened to it three times in a row and enjoyed it each time. Day 59 - Manu Chao (Clandestino) 2/5 - Very unremarkable hotel lobby music but he has good politics so there's that? Idk nothing about this grabbed me at all but maybe if I was European and an annoying lefty dense nuggs of fat buds person in 2002 this would be a vibe Day 60 - Spiritualized (Lazer Guided Melodies) 3/5 - I listened to this a couple of times because it was pretty easy to let it mentally fade to the background and I wanted to actually notice it. All I know from Spiritualized is "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space", which I do like, so I guess that was my only benchmark for what I expected from this debut of theirs. There is a good amount of that sound in this one, but this is also decidedly more jangly and shoegazey. It reminds me a lot of the more mellow songs on Primal Scream's Screamadelica, particularly "I'm Coming Down". It was really pleasant to have on, and it definitely has an atmosphere around it, but apart from Shine A Light, which is probably the best Spiritualized song I've ever heard, the individual tracks are pretty forgettable. This is definitely an album you put on start to finish just for the mood it sets. Day 61 - Boston (s/t) 3/5 - I wanted to hate this but it's totally inoffensive and a classic for a reason. I like the vocals so much. I likely won't come back to it but I enjoyed it beginning to end. It's comfort music. Solid dadrock. I get why it's on the radio all the fucking time. Day 62 - Elvis Presley (Elvis Is Back) 3/5 - The cover of Fever and The Girl of My Best Friend are both so fucking good. This didn't sell me on becoming a big Elvis fan but I enjoyed it a lot, I listened to it twice. Probably won't come back to the whole thing through hence the 3/5 but those two songs are fucking great. I like this a lot more than the more manic high energy classics I've heard like Hound Dog which I find kind of obnoxious, ballad-y crooning Elvis is where it's at. Day 63 - The Clash (s/t) 4/5 - Can you believe I've always claimed to really like The Clash but never listened to this in full? Such a poser. It's really good but I still have more of a taste for Sandinista! and Combat Rock, I guess I just love weirdo post-punk Clash best. But this is still pretty good. The bass lines are killer too. White Riot and Hate & War and What's My Name all back to back are some of the best punk music ever written. I wish I liked it even more than I did but I guess the coolest thing about The Clash to me was always how eclectic their tastes were and I find myself missing that. Though I do love how much stripped down Clash reminds me of The Jam. Good shit! Day 64 - Ella Fitzgerald (The Gershwin Songbook) 4/5 - This is three hours and fifteen minutes long. Yes, I listened to the entire thing. More than that really, because I kept replaying tracks, so maybe like five hours worth of listening. It took me several days to get through because I enjoyed it that much. I guess there were like 7-8 tracks to me that were really standout and the rest were nice background music, but I'll definitely come back to it, mainly because it's really nice lounging/cleaning music to put on. Day 65 - The Zutons (Who Killed...... The Zutons?) 2/5 - Apple Store indie. (Derogatory.)

got this album today and I gotta say it still has some fucking riffs on this shit. When the Sun Goes Down still fucks. I didn't really like most of the albums that came after that they put out until that weird Space Casino album years later. I do think the main guy has songwriting chops and knows how to write a damn fine hook, I just also think he spent a lot of their career not really willing to get as weird and loose as they did on this one (at least until recent years) and purposefully being a little too sterile and pedestrian.

Fell off this project hard a few months ago. wen't to create a new project to start fresh, and the first album I got was the Smiths. I’m just gonna go drown myself instead of listen to that.
wen't back to my original project and today’s album is Tricky- Maxinquaye. Not a fan of English hip-hop but this isn’t so bad so far.

Just started and they picked Sign 'O' The Times by Prince. I clicked Apple Music and it says it’s not available in your country. Ok I won’t do this again. Thank you.

I've just been searching "[Artist] [Album] rar", and downloading most. Out of 170 albums I've listened to, I'd say only 10 or so have I needed to stream. For those I typically use YouTube (with an ad blocker because BOY do YouTube ads completly ruin the point of listening to something in album form). The bad news is I found A LOT of them on Archive.org, which has been down now for weeks because of a cyber attack. Here is every Prince album ever released

It was only 5 years since white stripes and his first solo record so the sound is a lot more similar than I was expecting.

That Plastic Ono Band album is easily my favorite Beatles-related thing. It's incredible.
The fact that you didn't really get that record is kind of fucking with me! I will confess it!

Blunderbuss had maybe 2 or 3 songs I really enjoyed, but everything else just made me think of a blues version Anthony Kiedis was singing.
Today I got Sabbath s/t. Guess now I gotta go smoke out my car and blast this shit at 9:30 am. 5 stars.

Past week or so:
Bill Evans Trio, Sunday At The Village Vanguard - Smooth jazz. Really good but if I'm in the mood for jazz I usually go weirder. 3/5
Marty Robins, Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs - 50's country. Sounds like mariachi without horns. For country it's pretty inoffensive. Actually reminiscent of some rock from that same era. 3/5
Jacques Brel, Olympia 64 - French crooner. Did not like. Luckily it was originally a 10" LP so it;s short. 2/5
The Jesus And Mary Chain, Psychocandy - wen't in expecting to hate this, but it's OK. I dig the faster tunes and not so much the plodders. 3/5
Mariah Carey, BBUtterfly - Fun this! 1/5
Arctic Monkey, Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not - Nice surprise to find I like this a lot. Not sone listening yet, but it will probably be a 4/5

At this point, doing this is the most consistent thing in my life I think The 1/5 on Sufjan Stevens Illinois breaks my heart a little. I definitely get why because he's very sappy and indulgent but that record left a huge impression on my middle school Pitchfork baby hipster self! It was the first time I'd heard a concept album that wasn't some 60s rock opera type thing and I thought it was so cool. (Derogatory.) Day 66 - Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris (Trio) 1/5 - No. Day 67 - Pet Shop Boys (Behaviour) 3/5 - Like a more Twin Peaks, more mellow Depeche Mode. I just got another Pet Shop Boys from this generator literally a week or two before this but it was a lot more kitschy than this. And this is plenty kitsch and camp too, because its still the Pet Shop Boys, but this takes itself somewhat more seriously and feels more "adult" in like an '80s corporate elevator music way. It's pretty cool but it gets monotonous. Day 68 - Sigur Rós (Ágætis Byrjun) 5/5 - Oh my god, what a pleasure to get one of the best bands I've ever seen in my life and an record that completely opened up my entire world when I first heard it in middle school. I guess there are a few tiny moments where I have to give twelve year old me credit for being extremely cool. It's one of the best ambient/post-rock albums ever made. Day 69 - Joanna Newsom (Ys) 5/5 - Two 5's back to back -- this fucking rules. It's so maudlin that a lesser artist would have made this feel like it ventures into Disney girl territory but it's so fucking perfect that it never manages to toe that line. Real weird girl hours who the fuck is up!!! Day 70 - OutKast (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) 4/5 - Almost all killer, very little filler. But there's enough skips for it to be a 4 for me. I just get annoyed by how many interludes and preludes and outros and skits older hip hop records have, and this is over two hours long so there's a lottt of that. I prefer The Love Below to Speakerboxxx it's just way weirder and also more mature and cohesive. If it was just The Love Below I'd rate this a 5, but I still just really like both.

last few days...
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive 1/5
Notes: I just can't get into this shit at all. Which is funny considering I fucking love cheesy 70's stuff. I just think the songs themselves really suck.
Rush - 2112 2/5
Notes: I can understand why people like it and why it was a big prog album, I just don't like this particular Rush album. probably an unpopular apinion but I prefer the later, poppier stuff like Moving Pictures.
The Jam - All Mod Cons 4/5
Notes: Paul Weller flexing all over this muthafuckah. only reason it is not a 5/5 album for myself is I just don't really think of it that often, but always a treat to visit.
Curtis Mayfield - There's No Place Like America Today 5/5
Notes: This is one of my all time favorites, along with most of his 70's albums. The song Jesus starts off with nothing to the beat but a high hat behind a church organ and midway through this snare subtly comes in that makes you start nodding ya head. I think it is a fun little trick on a gorgeous track that encapsulates the mans genius.
Today I got Bowie's Hunky Dory, which obviously falls somewhere between 4 or 5 on the 5 rating scale
