His talk on the Country Music Matters podcast is worth checking out if you a minute or two to kill.

This muchacho Bob Wayne is playing in a village about half an hour from me, it's pretty bad but I'm also kinda real interested in seeing who goes to a show like this in my area. Is it worth it BiL? He seems to be in Europe a lot, which leads me to believe he probably has no chance of a career in the US.

I've never seen him perform but there was a time where he would be playing a set with his "Outlaw Carnies" band around here just about every other weekend it seemed. Was a big hit with the rockabilly crowd, you know, the type that reeeaaally loved Walk The Line. An hour and a half's worth of driving seems steep for standing around betty boop and johnny cash impersonators...

This is exactly what I imagined. It would be about an hour train ride each direction for me, but it's a sunday at 17.00 and beers cost .50 apparently. Might be worth it for a laugh.

I'll admit pounding 50 cent beers while doing some people watching on a sunday afternoon sounds pretty good, Bob Wayne being there or not. Go for it and live tweet the circus for the Board.

VNE tonight was dope. He played five-six tracks (mostly new/unreleased stuff) and covered Thirteen Silver Dollars.

That dollarcountry youtube channel has some cool songs. Props to the poster who shared that.
DAC is cool even though hes a racist, his best of is probably my favorite outlaw country record.

Another one I'd like to very briefly talk about is Willis Alan Ramsey. People from Texas ought to know this guy. When I'd first learned of him, a long time ago now, he had his one single album from 1972 on Shelter, though he'd written many more songs and people like Lovett owe him more than politeness would allow one to say aloud. That record is one of few LPs I haven't and wouldn't let go of, though it's wearing out now, and I think it's an extremely rare album where every song is wonderful. There are a lot of great anecdotes from people where Willis responds to pleas for another album by asking what was wrong with the first one. In his case I think it's both a bit funny and a bit true. If it's so rare to have an album where every song is a winner, no less when you're annoyingly young, why take the risk? Besides, he was able to live the rest of his life on the back of other people covering those songs. So why not? He's making another album and has been for a long time now. It used to be called Gentilly, though I don't know if he's still going with that. Willis is someone I'd jealously guarded, like an idiot, when Townes Van Zandt and the "Heartworn Highways" alum (somehow David Allan Coe escaped the adoration, and Steve Young also didn't get his share, but all the same) started getting his share of attention and, finally, bad covers in Starbucks locations around 2007 or whatever it was. I got older and stopped guarding things like an idiot, though I guess it isn't so strange to guard things we care about. Anyway, I will post some choice stuff from Willis' first album here for those who haven't heard it, some amazing live footage from the 80s, some from the oughts, and finally his new song (you follow The Next Waltz on Youtube, right?). Misc live stuff from the 80s (including the late great Champ Hood - you should follow that thread if you don't know him): This is pure gold footage from a live show where Willis does a brilliant version of "Angel Eyes" (I'm sad to say it's gone, but not before I stole all his technique from him) and a great song from his upcoming album. This new song is called "Saint Norman." I'm not sure it will be better on the record than it was here. All the same, the sound quality is what it is. And finally, the new song:

Despite looking like an ex-train hopping crust punk, he knows how to pull off that yodeling country style. His whole new album's been on heavy rotation lately.

Ya, I’ve put my guard down for ex-oogle looking dudes, some of them have some skills but god I feel I can smell ‘em through the screen. Also have been listening to Willis as well, solid album.

PSA that Sarah Shook is doing a pretty decent sized tour with West Coast dates.
Can anyone recommend more female artists like her? Seems like a lot of alt country female vocals are much gentler which I'm not as into.

Woody Guthrie would probably have been an oogle. Ola Belle Reed is one of the greatest clawhammer players of all time imo. If you like her, you may like Rosecoe Holcomb as well. And possibly Clifton Hicks, he plays all old time banjo like Ola and Roscoe I need to pickup my banjo again

The first one that comes to mind is Nikki Lane, but maybe she’d still need a pack of smokes to be what you’re after

Emily Nenni might be up your alley, a bit more rough around the edges than most others in my apinion.

Sucks that Daniel Romano has 3 solid albums of country he'll never touch again.

That was the sad ramblings of a drunken man, apologies. However, can we talk about how the last two Drive By Truckers have been pretty bad. American Band at least sounds like a DBT album but this newest just sounds off.

So I just got back from seeing Kacy and Clayton. Caught em in the same place I saw Charley Crockett last year only it was a seated show this time around. Sitting down during a band's performance will never not be weird after a lifetime of rowdy punk shows but I guess it made sense being a wednesday. Anyway, they played for about an hour despite looking like total trainwrecks. White Butte Country made it onto the setlist which was a plus and they closed the show with a cover of Dough Sahm's Dynamite Woman.
