nice to see that the landlord paint job transcends language and geography. its not even landlords, all tenants are expected to do it upon leaving. Its also common to rent an apartment without a kitchen.

We have flashing all over our house because the guy the previous owners hired to get the house ready for showing used a brush to touch up rollered walls. Jabroni ass idiot.

place I'm renovating right now the dickhead didn't even tape the wall to ceiling joints, then just covered it with a baskin robbins selection of paint colors and a "creative" knockdown finish on all the ceilings.

Still sanding my kitchen cabinets down. Tedious but should be worth it and next weekend I should've started on painting them. Also dropped a grip on cabinet handles and light fixtures over the weekend. Will be glad to get this project finished so I can spend my money on more fun stuff.

Clearly, I've splashed out then. Probably could've gone cheap, but might as well push the boat out when it's your own place I suppose.

When it rains, it pours lol. My wife and I thought we were G's ... When her catalytic converter got stolen a few months back, I was like 'fuck it, let's buy a new car with cash'. We pulled 40 G's outta savings, had 10 left and figured we were good. And then our washing machine shits the bed, the knobs start falling off our stove, our microwave panel starts shorting out, and our garage doors have been slowly dry rotting away as the final layer of generation grey paint that the previous owners reluctantly applied to meet the terms of our FHA loan peels and chippies away with each passing day.
Today we are getting our new Speed Queen washer from our local appliance shop, Redmond's Appliance. If you get your appliances from a big box store like Lowe's or Home Depot, I implore you to reconsider. There is one in your town, they supply all the local restaurants, and they are like living and breathing museums that are still refurbishing the old stuff that wasn't built like crap.
Actually, unlike cars or other consumer electronics, domestic home appliances apparently never wen't crap-o: it just seems like this is one of the last industries where mom n pop shops have the upper hand on the corporate giants. If you buy crappy appliances, maybe manufactured by a company that makes your cellphone or your TV from a crappy store, then you're obviously gonna think that everyone else is buying crap too.
My boss joked that I did more research into the washing machine than the car, as he did himself when he bought his first place. I felt like such a boss when we were disconnecting the corroded-to-shit water lines in the back, and there was water speeding everywhere and I quickly grabbed a pipe wrench and smacked the thing shut. I liked to think my wife thought it was very manly of me!
The stove was easy to fix... There are two holes for screws that stick out of the main panel, and you sort of hook the knob on, on opposite ends. It took us like five seconds, but also, we are stupid fucking idiots that didn't understand how the mechanism worked when we first saw it, so we stuffed the knob and the screws into a sandwich bag for 6 fucking months while they all collected dust and we learned to live with only 3 burners.
Microwave panel has been shorting out for months. I punched the model number into Google and it returned several YouTube videos on the matter, featuring the same or similar model GE microwaves. I taught myself how to pop off the label, clean all the points, and reseat the ribbon cable that connected the panel for the microwave itself.
That worked for like 6 months at a time, and I did it maybe like 3 times. Now, every time we plug it in, we have to set the time and date within about a minute so we can have some usable time before it stops(or starts) by itself, starts beeping loudly and randomly, and flashing weird characters on the screen before shutting off completely, and then abruptly BEEPONG on loudly and informing you that the panel is indeed shorted.
A new control panel will cost about a hundred bucks. Which at the end of the day isn't that much, but on top of everything else.... It's something I've been putting off lately.... And I've been getting so good at reheating food in the oven!
Garage/shed doors are another matter altogether. The shed itself is... Well it's a blessing and a curse. I love having my own little shop and storage for all our bikes and our seasonal lawn stuff(Cornhole set, coolers, lawn chairs, etc). It's the original carriage house from 1920, when the house was built, and you can tell before the previous owners had sodded over the front of it, that it once connected to what is now the driveway. No matter - we prefer having the backyard space, and it's great for the dog. I'm sure in 1920, the "driveway" was mostly just a dirt path.
However, the original wooden siding has gaps and inconsistencies everywhere. There are a few plants that are growing in from the outside, and worst of all, the original carriage doors are rotted out, barely holding the windows up. It looks like the previous owners extended the front with modern construction techniques, and modern materials. Something of a hack job, as it hasn't held up like the rest of the shed has. You can actually see the points where the carriage doors originally were, further inside the shed, and the old hardware is pretty crazy lookin'.
We were gonna eventually copy the design of the OG carriage doors and make a replica using our buddy's miter saw, but might have to come up with a temporary solution by the time fall hits, cuz I don't want all my shit getting fucked up in the colder months.
Been learning a lot, and making myself a lil more useful around the house. I think it's been good for my marriage! We've grown closer through our struggles... But it's been terrible for our finances lol

having anxiety about the thought of buying a house and haven’t even actually started the process yet. haha! it is a very nerve-racking thing, and you will fall in love and have your heart broken a million times during the process. But once you are finally under contract, it's all smooth-sailing from there. Best thing I ever did. we closed on a 60s ranch a week ago today. it only had one owner the whole time and looks like it was pretty damn well taken care of. it also somehow barely smells like old people! all in all, pretty fuckin excited. first thing we're gonna do is scrape the popcorn ceilings, yank out the 70s carpet (which is straight up neon red in one room), and refinish the hardwoods underneath. can't wait to suit up and get antiquated with whatever the fuck lurks in the crawlspace 👍

Bought our house 11 years ago now, and honestly feel like it was the best decision we could've made. At the time, it felt like 30-35 minutes (without traffic) outside Boston was really far, but it was where we could afford. Even earning more now than I did then, the pricing is staggeringly different. No way I'd be able to buy my first home in this area if I was looking now. I'd be yet ANOTHER 25+ miles further out, making commuting basically impossible

To each their own but paying significant money to some parasite landlord for an apartment really got to me.
That said a house down the street the same size as ours just sold for 50% more than we paid 18 months ago, so the market seems to keep getting dumber, and at a certain point it makes more sense to rent.
