Uncut Gems is officially my favorite film of the year, also one of the most anxiety inducing films I've ever seen.
I'm still hyperventilating and fucking sweating right now. My heart rate is fucked for the rest of the year.
Edit: Benny Safdie mentioned in the Q+A that there was about 100 drafts of the script.

Richard Jewell
After a very, very rocky start, Clint dashes through this tale of a man heinously wronged by his country with “fuuuurious anger” as if it happened yesterday. Wonderfully acted - you get professional work from everyone involved. Rockwell could have played this role in his sleep but he gave it a lot more heart than what was on the page. And then we are graced with a candidate for for most gut wrenching acting of the year in a stellar scene from Kathy Bates. It’s really three minutes of the best acting I’ve ever seen, for a scene like that. You’ll know it when you see it.
Clint likes to be brisk behind the camera, not opting to shoot take after take, and one cannot blame him, but there’s just a few scenes that felt like they could be passed at again. However this is still one of his better works of this decade.

I have seen him work though and he prepares endlessly before shooting that "one take" so that it's perfect... it's really kind of amazing, even if he is a cranky old fart who thinks everyone's a pussy.

Oh, nice. I mean the dudes like almost 90 so he ain’t got time to be Kubrick in the chair. It is definitely movie that will be liked in Red states - it’s a very anti-government movie, which is so weird to think is a Republican boner-giver kinda thing now. But it’s incredibly well acted.

In Fabric was.............disappointing. Intentionally avoided spoilers but heard it was one of the best horror movies of the year. Big Argento influence for sure, but didn't seem to come together to be better than the sum of its parts or kind of took a left when it should have gone right I think.

Yeah, Richard Jewell was fine. Better than his last couple true story movies a la Sully and American Sniper. Olivia Wilde puts so much effort into such a one-dimensional character. Even though it's a simple story stating the events, it's also easy to see why this is a libertarian's wet dream.

Black Christmas was a 90 minute Twitter argument. Yikes, what a shit show. I would never have guessed the second reboot of a mediocre slasher taking place on Christmas would be a total dumpster fire. That being said watch Silent Night Deadly Night 2 the best fun bad movie for Christmas.

Well, the original Black Christmas is a gem. The 06 remake is a crazy mess but a deranged, how did this make it wide movie. This one has nothing to do with any of that, except the setting.

Jingle All the Way for sure. Sinbad for life.
The Santa Clause with Tim Allen is a movie I watched in theaters as a kid.
That Netflix movie last year with Kurt Russell was fun, if I remember. It was not great, but Russell

Did somebody just call the OG Black Christmas 'a mediocre slasher.'
What the hell is going on.

Uncut Gems is online if you know where to look, not trying to get board/film thread shut down- and it's better to see it in theaters if you can (the TIFF screening was incredible). Can forward a link over pm if anyone wants it though (Edit: Apparently the torrent is really lousy quality, probably a low quality screener)
Also rewatched Hagazussa recently, definitely in my top 3 of the year (2017 film, but got wide release in 2019 so I count it).

Crawl looked super hokey but it was actually a pretty concise fun thrill.
I miss a solid 90 min movie.

Black Christmas was a 90 minute Twitter argument. Yikes, what a shit show. Heard nothing but bad things about this. People on Twitter were posting pictures of empty theaters of Black Christmas, mostly being happy that another feminist-tinged movie failed. I think it failed because it's A) PG-13 B) horror fans would rather have a straight up remake of the original and not an interpretation C) the movie started filming in July and D) horror movies just don't do well in December historically. Regardless, Black Christmas cost $5M and it made $4.4M this weekend, hardly a flop, and will likely be in the black when it hits VOD because let's face it, horror fans will watch it. I know I will eventually.

My local libraries have a treasure trove of Russian films. I took out a bunch to watch over the holidays.
It's incredible how pioneering and ahead of their time they were with structures and techniques.
Gimme some recommendations.

That one is wild.
I just finished The Dawns Here Are Quiet. '72 film about a female anti-air unit on the front during WW2. It's in two parts. First part is like an episode of MASH with all these surreal dream sequences and tenderness. Second half is a horror movie with so much tension the entire remaining hour and a half.
Highly recommended.

Alexander Nevsky Battleship Potemkin Andrei Rublev
&
Come and See, although its definitely not basic
