Question for the thread: what is the most badly-wasted movie premise you can think of? For me it might be Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. Just typing out the title makes me laugh, but the movie sucked and was a missed opportunity just based off of the premise alone. Mortal Kombat Annihilation.Additionally the only thing I hate about that Harold & Kumar movie is the love story.Could have totally eliminated that from the film.

Finally got around to The King of Comedy, and not only did Deniro kill that but god damn so did Sandra Bernhard. Delightfully unhinged.

It was straight-up summer blockbuster and monster movie malpractice.

I was so stoked thinking they understood the pitfall of trying to have "character development" and "relationships" in the first, but instead they double downed and I ended up being bored for 2 hrs. Infuriating.

This is just my apinion but I didn't enjoy Zodiac, even though I am fascinated by The Zodiac himself.Fine movie it just didn't grab me by the balls like I had hoped until the last quarter where our protagonist is actually in danger.

I think this has been gone over in this thread, but Zodiac isn't a violent slasher film, it's a mystery about how you can't trust your own intuitions. I also like Zodiac stuff and I thought the movie hit the bull's eye in terms of not only presenting it with all its messiness and contradictions, but making that the whole point.

Election and Anarchy were definitely very solid, though.

I was kind of underwhelmed by Uncut Gems. Same. I guess it's part of the experience knowing how inevitable it all is, but it was a rollercoaster that I wanted to let myself off of.

Question for the thread: what is the most badly-wasted movie premise you can think of? Bad Times at the El Royale. I was really looking forward to this one. Such a great cast, and a great opening setup. But the movie just kind of meandered with dialogue that wen't nowhere and eventually it lost all focus until the train wreck of an ending. If the director didn't try so hard to be Tarantino and just let the movie play out without all the self indulgent bullshit, it could have been a classic.

By the end of the movie i realized i'd never sit through that again. Speaking of Tarantino / 60s... I LOVED Once Upon A Time in Hollywood by the way.

The Two Popes is basically Green Book minus the corny jokes rooted in racial stereotypes

Watched a great early '70s blaxploitation flick last night called Hammer. One of the better films of the genre. Fred Williamson is great as a dock worker / street fighter turned boxer caught up in the criminal underworld. Plays out more like Hard Times with Charles Bronson meets On the Waterfront than the usual pimps, cops, drugs, crime caper etc you'd expect. Excellent music of course. Great stuff. I never get tired of movies like this.
Also watched another '70s flick called Black Sampson about a bad-ass bar owner (with an actual lion roaming the bar) who carries a big staff looking stick (Walking Tall style) and fights off dealers trying to move in on his neighborhood. Pure entertainment. As fun (and funky) as these films get.

Almost threw up during the climax of Uncut Gems. The visual metaphor for sweating a game was both hilariously too much and sublime.
But yeah, the inevitable was inevitable and I was prolly the only person who didn't flinch or gasp when it happened.

The Best of the Decade:
1. Burning 2. Roma 3. Our Little Sister 4. The Yellow Sea 5. First Reformed 6. The Lobster 7. Moonlight 8. Inside Llewyn Davis 9. Elena 10. Winter's Bone
I don't see every movie that comes out like some of you lucky people, but I saw a fair bit and this is what stuck. I also limited it to one entry per director, because it would have been all Kore-eda and Lee Chang Dong if I didn't. I still need to see Parasite, before anyone yells at me.

Finally saw most of there's something about Mary. my mum took me to see this and i asked her "what is he doing?!" out loud in the jerking off scene. everyone in the row laughed at me. top 10 of the decade is pretty fucking difficult. i could try, though.

The Social Network is my favorite of the decade. After that, it's incredibly hard to narrow it down to a top 10 list.
