Top 25 of 2019 1. Uncut Gems 2. An Elephant Sitting Still 3. A Long Day's Journey Into Night 4. Ash is the Purest White 5. The Last Black Man in San Francisco 6. High Life 7. The Lighthouse 8. Parasite 9. Marriage Story 10. The Wild Pear Tree 11. Atlantics 12. Pain and Glory 13. Birds of Passage 14. Climax 15. The Beach Bum 16. Luz 17. Ad Astra 18. High Flying Bird 19. Transit 20. The Mountain 21. Portrait of a Lady on Fire 22. A Hidden Life 23. Monos 24. Diamantino 25. In Fabric The Last Black Man in SF was really great, definitely the most surprisingly great movie I saw this year. Didn't care for The Wild Pear Tree very much. Elephant Sitting Still and Climax were two that really are their own sort of experience in a very good way.

A Hidden Life stylistically is like a perfect mix between The Tree Of Life and The New World but not as enjoyable as either. I wanted to love it and I didn’t love it, but I did like it.
It’s also very possible I wasn’t in the right headspace to take in a Malick.

Although the camerawork was beautiful, it was heavy handed and never really eased up on the close up, wide lens, low angle style. After a while it felt kinda one note and made me motion sick. I think The Revenant had a better balance of this type of camera style.

Gotta check out Climax as well, never even heard of that Ad Astra was polarizing for sure. It’s just a drama, James Gray style, in space. David Ehrlich was a big praiser of it, I think it was #2 on his video countdown. I think people always want some kind of mind blowing twist or so,etjing when it comes to space movies. And Climax is a 100% Noe movie.

I thought Ad Astra was fantastic. I like that it's not some big action sci-fi movie and that it has a very deliberate pace.

Ad Astra had a Solaris vibe. Not as slow, but calculated and well done. Thought it was great.

Going to see 1917 at the movies this afternoon. Anyone caught it yet? It's good. If the story was as good as the cinematography, I would've call it the greatest war film of all time.

Haven't seen it pop up around here yet but I will absolutely be going to the theatre for it. Probably the last thing I'll see in the theatre for a bit too given how January and February typically look.

Knives Out wasn't as good as Clue or Game Night honestly if you're comparing mystery movies.

1917 was great. I dont get peoples issues with the story. I thought it was more than good enough to drive the movie from point to point.

Watched Climax and The Big Sick yesterday. Highly, highly recommend both.
Climax was a visual feast, told a cool story and really pulled you in. That initial dance scene was absolutely goddamn mesmerizing.
The Big Sick was hysterical and legitimately heartwarming. Genuinely wasn't expecting it to be that funny, and it didn't overstay its welcome like some Apatow movies tend to.

Alright, Saw uncut gems last night with a group of people and everyone including myself hated it. People were laughing in the theater when Adam was doing his crying bit with Julia was consoling him. I heard a lot of groans through out the movie. I'm shocked that critics liked this movie, but the audience score seemed to hate it: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/uncut_gemsI guess people were excited to see Adam in a drama, but his character was so despicable and one dimensional that I just didn't care at all what happened to him. The best part of the movie is the end when Adam gets shot.
Finally! Anyways, I'm curious to hear what people liked about it. I guess it's a tragedy and the lesson is that hubris and excess will get you killed, but the build up was so long for that end. Kevin Garnett was actually good and Julia was good (Apparently she was a working Dom before acting?) Anyways, this and star wars were abysmal for me.

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Sander can certainly act, but no chance in hell hes winning an Oscar for this. when you say his character is just flat out unlikable, to quote the movie, I disagree. I disagree Gary. Despite the fact that he makes every wrong decision he can out of pure selfishness, I still found myself rooting for him the whole time. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the fact that its adam sandler, and at some subconscious level I and millions of others will always find him charming. I knew KG was in the movie but I had no idea he would have such a prominent role, I thought it was more of a 2 second cameo that they'd stick in the trailer. He was great. He's getting a lot of praise for this and im curious if hes gonna want to act more.

He's getting a lot of praise for this and im curious if hes gonna want to act more. He is a rich slimy jewel hustler who just wanted more. I just couldn't identify with him at all. I felt no pity or remorse for him and I just wanted him dead. I thought the movie was going to be like a heist or a revenge plot or have some sort of story / backbone besides the protagonist 'winning' by taking a bet at the end. "This is how I win" was such an eye roll. KG was great though, like I was surprised how well he did.
