Watched some cool things and some not cool things recently:
The Crying Game - VERY different movie in the latter two acts than the first made it seem like it was going to be, but really terrific. Knew nothing about it going in and got my money's worth on that second-act reveal. Also, somehow did a better job of handling a trans character in the early 90s than probably any movie I've seen since.
Peanut Butter Falcon - Legitimately heartwarming and beautiful. Terrific use of scenery and soundtrack. Also, Thomas Haden Church did a LOT of heavy lifting in the short time he was actually on screen.
Girl on the Third Floor - Watched this because I thought I remembered hearing it was good months ago. It was not. I also forgot CM Punk was the star, and that was quite an unwelcome surprise because he suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. It wasn't the worst thing I've seen but not much of this was redeeming.
Death Ship - I'll be honest, I watched this strictly because it was called DEATH SHIP. How can you not, you know? Well, also wasn't great. Much better than GOTTF and fairly entertaining but nothing I'd recommend.
Ready or Not - This is gonna be Samara Weaving's coming out party. She was an absolute force in this and the plot was a pretty cool spin on a relatively familiar formula. Highly recommended.
The Holy Mountain - Absolutely wild visuals here but it was simultaneously inscrutable and very heavy-handed. Weird dynamic. I'd watch it again because I probably missed some things but I'd say it's worth checking out for the cinematography alone. The colors and denseness of every frame were impressive.

^ THE CRYING GAME is so good! Definitely agree with your statement. Crazy to think that the reveal was kept a huge secret all the way thru the movie's run and audiences really had zero idea and were completely shocked when they actually saw the movie. Even at the Oscars that year there was a huge push for no one to spoil it because all the money movies USED to make from the post-Oscars theater runs if they were nominated for Best Picture. Billy Crystal includes a bit about it in his opening song from the night's ceremony, its quite funny. Its on YouTube.
I love early 90s smaller movies that became Oscar-type hits. The sultriness of them all...like The Piano too. A lot of great stuff from Ireland/UK around this time. And Australia.

Watched Monsters and Men the other night. Wasn't a fan. Thought weaving the different stories together didn't work too well and it seemed simultaneously heavy handed while being a bit shallow, too. Idk.

Watched this Burt Lancaster drama called The Swimmer. I wasn't sure what to think of it in the first half as it mostly consist of Lancaster in an overly upbeat mood while dressed in a speedo and being utterly fixated by every swimming pool he encounters, it seemed like a movie to have a drinking game too. The second half was what truly won me once it gets unsettling and bizarre.

1917 was incredible. PISSED at Disney for not being able to see it the proper way.
Reminded me I need to give Road To Perdition a rewatch.

Reminded me I need to give Road To Perdition a rewatch. Been beating the 'Road to Perdition is one of the best movies of the 2000s' drum since it came out. The sound and cinematography of that movie are absolutely mesmerizing, the acting from Hanks, Law and Craig is terrific and it told a fantastic story. That Newman "this is the life we chose, the life we lead" speech in the basement gives me absolute chills to think about.

I've never seen the film, but the story has been kinda blasted in recent times as representative of middle class male narcissism. Similar to Rabbit, Run which also has a film adaptation starring James Caan.

I can see why it's viewed that way especially if you choose to feel bad for Lancaster's character (I didn't), I just looked at it as an attack of achieving the status quo.

Funny, this was on at a bar the other night and my friend couldn't believe it because his dad was a grip on the production and he's been hearing about it his whole life

The "may he get to heaven at least an hour before the devil know's he's gone" speech and then the piano playing with Hanks, god damn. Just a master class in acting from Paul Newman. I'm glad that was his last real role.

Watched Shot Caller yesterday. Pretty good movie though I dont fully buy Coster-Waldau as a prison tough guy. Also the post-prison plot is kinda confusing

Bad Boys for Life was generic fun, not bombastic and overwhelming as the last one. A part of me kinda misses Bay's moron energy. Not bad for a January release. Not crazy spoilers, but it involves some cameos. Michael Bay cameo could've been more stupid, but this was tasteful. Watching DJ Khaled getting tortured was pretty tight.

I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for one shot films after seeing 1917 and saw that Bela Tarr had a 57 minute scene in his Macbeth adaptation. I considered watching his film for Satantango after reading the book, but then saw that it was 450 minutes long. I know this dude is supposed to be some kind of art film legend, but I'm not enough of a nerd to have seen anything by him. Anyone ever watch this dude's shit?

Just saw 1917 in 4DX, which was a pretty crazy experience. Really good movie. wanna hear more about this! Did you get rained on or anything? Haha, yes. I'd never done it before, so I was little surprised to sit down and see a "Water On/Off" button on my seat. They have seats blocked off in 4s that rumble and turn based on the film. There's like a puncher in the seat that thumps you whenever someone gets knocked over, air that comes over you for wind or a plane flying by, and a fog machine that replicates smoke on the screen. It was a little cold in the theater, so getting splashed with water then having air blown at you didn't make it very comfortable, but it was worth the $20 ticket for sure.
