Not sure why 'Auto Focus' (2002) doesn't get more acclaim from the Schrader-heads but I loved it. #3 Schrader movie (behind 'Mishima' & 'First Reformed')
Willem Dafoe is so good at playing the friend. He's so good at playing everything. Greg Kinnear is a guy I'm not really a fan of? But he plays it so well in 'Auto Focus', a sex pervert but with such confidence, casualness. He really impressed me here. By the end the Angelo Badalamenti score becomes more prominent and I was reminded of later era David Lynch. A must see movie.

Hit Man is a blast. First half feels like a fun acting showcase for Glen Powell, but it gets really good when the story kicks into gear in the second half.

It’s a very good one. Whole cast rocks. Excellent pacing, too. Hugh Grant was my favorite part of this, and there’s a lot to like at pretty much every turn.

Watched EWS a couple weeks ago again and had forgotten Hit Man was coming so soon. Still have 45min left of Hit Man (baby had other plans), but love it so far. The Patrick Bateman rip was so good. Powell is so good when he can have fun and be a little free with his character (EWS, Hit Man, Top Gun), but I can see him having to take the Ryan Reynolds path and throw up some studio shit (Twisters, whatever role Marvel gives him the bag for) and mid romcoms that mostly hold up because of him (Anyone But You). On that last note, I'm sorry, y'all. I know the world is currently all about Sydney Sweeney because she has cool boobs and is willing to show them (very rare in LA), but I gave her a last chance with Anyone But You and she failed miserably. No chemistry, no verve, just downturned eyes and cleavage. Like, all she had to do was feed off Glenn's spark, but gave nothing back. |

Knowing that real-life Plummer was just a dude on the Vandy baseball team who got a good buzz going before the casting call makes the character that much better. |
