The Bikeriders was fine.
I wonder if it could be better as a deeper miniseries.

Maxxxine was awesome even though it got a little wonky towards the end. Was suspenseful and intriguing throughout. I really liked the idea of having the Night Stalker as a constant presence in the backdrop and thought he nailed the 80s look and feel. I was surprised by the heavy giallo/eyetalian horror-exploitation influences, was not expecting that. Oh and Kevin Bacon was a real creep. A fun afternoon at the movies!!

Maxxxine Longlegs I Saw The TV Glow A Quiet Place: Day One Abigail Arcadian Late Night With The Devil Love Lies Bleeding
This is one of the worst years I can think of when it comes to horror movies. No matter how much you boil slop, it still belongs in the trash. (Sorry)

No matter how much you boil slop, it still belongs in the trash. (Sorry) Oh come on. I get that Maxxine and Longlegs have disappointed some people (havenât seen either yet) but weâre really gonna act like Late Night With the Devil and Loge Lies Bleeding werenât both really good and really creative? Nah. The First Omen was also great. Stopmotion was a delightful surprise. Lowlifes was super fun. Immaculate was a good watch. I havenât seen it but The Coffee Table was very well received. Not every year can be 2022 but âone of the worst years I can rememberâ is legit hysteria.

Also, itâs fucking July.
We still have:
- Trap - Alien: Romulus - Terrifier 3 - Smile 2 - Afraid - Nosferatu - Cuckoo - Return to Silent Hill
And some stuff Iâm forgetting and/or stuff thatâs yet to be announced. Some seriously negative-ass posting in the last few pages of this thread.

I would rather watch 10 more original but slightly disappointing horror films over more Dune bullshit

Also, itâs fucking July. You may be right... the next 6 months could be where all 2024's heat is. I just haven't seen a single horror movie that I would call "great" so far. I've just been let down by every "hyped" horror movie so far this year. (I didn't mention 'The First Omen' earlier because that was probably the best I've seen so far.) Can't speak on behalf of other posters but if anything I probably skew rating movies too highly, I don't think I'm too negative when it comes to film evaluation.

The Devil's Bath is my favorite horror film of the year, maybe not horror in a traditional sense, but it's very bleak and more horrifying since it's based on historical documents

Not every year can be 2022 but âone of the worst years I can rememberâ is legit hysteria. Okay name some worse recent years. I don't think I'm inciting hysteria but I'd love to be proven wrong. This is a dumb exercise because again, the year is half over (and the first three months of the year are never a horror bellwether) but: 2021 â The Night House and Come True were good, AQPII was fine, Malignant was interesting (didnât like the tonal pivot, Barbarian did that WAY better), Fear St movies were fun, St. Maud had a great ending but was just fine. Absolutely zero standouts all year, let alone modern classics. 2019 â Loved Doctor Sleep and Midsommar, US was solid, Color Out of Space was a trip⊠and what else? I donât consider Ready or Not horror (it did fuck tho), Bliss and Haunt were okay? Incredibly thin year after the top 3-4 best. So there you go, I had to go back all of five years to find two very eh years for horror overall.

I donât consider Ready or Not horror (it did fuck tho), Bliss and Haunt were okay? 2021 shouldn't count because of the bounceback from 2020 but it did have 'Titane' which clears any horror movie released this year so far. Calling the Palme d'Or winner not a standout is an interesting choice. 2019 had The Lighthouse, In Fabric, Climax, and Us. Seems like we disagree about what is "really good" and that's okay... both of these years exceed 2024. 'Nosferatu' is the only remaining release this year I'm confident about. Hoping that 'Alien: Romulus' doesn't sully the extraterrestrial name (once again.)

Titane is not a horror movie. The Lighthouse is not a horror movie. Climax is REALLY not a horror movie. That is why I didnât include them.

Iâd make the case for Climax in the sense that I hadnât been rocked by a movie like that in a long time. Especially the shit with the son, I was horrified lmfaoooooo

Who has Letterboxd? I've been watching episodes of At The Movies and all the other Ebert shows and I decided to make a list of the "Worst Movies" mentioned on their year end shows. Lots of stuff I can't agree with, like the inclusion of Cannonball Run. boxd.it/wWI8y

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead? Enough? The Hitcher???? nah let me dig them up and fight them Yeah, it's a funny list. I'm not done yet. I add a few episodes worth every day. I owned all of Ebert's books so I knew his apinions on stuff but it's still funny to see how much he hates a lot of popular movies. There was one that Siskel hated but Ebert liked that made total sense once you remembered he wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. I can't remember which it was though.

He also says Little Nicky is Sandler's best movie, even though he still dislikes it. That's wild. I feel like even if you think his movies are all bad, that one would be near the bottom.

Horror is a cult genre and highly subjective. There's no good or bad years imo and critics/general public don't know shit about what makes one good. We've had a steady stream of franchises, new takes, etc. and that should be all you need bitch.

I'm pretty stoked for A Different Man, I was a big fan of the director's last film Chained For Life, a darkly funny satire about the film industry's treatment of people with disabilities

The other one is called Keepers or something with the girl from She-Hulk. Neon is putting that the Monkey out so at least the marketing should be pretty good

tbh the supernatural part of longlegs along with the "twist" really fell flat. There was no lore building, I didn't care about the characters or their motivations, and we barely got to know longlegs. It had all the right pieces to be a classic, but it was never able to put all the pieces together. It's not that its a bad movie, it's just that it could have been so much better.
