Going up to the Fantasia Film Festival today... not catching a premiere or anything, but got tickets for a screening of Hollywood 90028. Should be cool. Movie was awesome... set and shot in early 70's LA, we basically follow a serial-killer cameraman as he works and kills his way through the sleazy underbelly of cheap porno productions. A mix of arthouse and horror/exploitation unlike anything I had really seen before... the last shot was absolutely fantastic. Very happy this one was rescued from obscurity: fantasiafestival.com/en/film/hollywood-90028

Twisters….
Completely absurd and nonsensical. Endlessly cheesy. Recycles a lot from its predecessor, bringing nothing new to the table beyond far, far better special effects. It also does zero to justify its existence.
And I loved every single minute of it.

Re-watched Starred Up (2013) directed by David Mackenzie who most notably did Hell or High Water. UK prison movie, absolutely incredible performance by Jack O’Connell as a volatile young prisoner who gets transferred to the same prison as his estranged his Dad, played by Ben Mendehlson who is great as always. High recommendation. 10 mins in and I’m absolutely shocked bloke has shoes with laces in lockup. Is this accurate?

Ben Mendelsohn is so good, especially in Starred Up, and I sorta feel like his agent does him a disservice at times.

Watching Twisters and I’m thinking that David Corenswet looks like a knockoff Henry Cavill. Check out his filmography and he’s playing Clark Kent in the next Superman. Sometimes Hollywood really does seem to keep a steady stream of similar looking actors in constant rotation.

wen't to the UK and now I'm back. Here all the movies I watched on the plane (and at my wife's parents house) that I liked a lot:
-His Girl Friday (1940) -To Be Or Not To Be (1942) -I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) -The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) -Midnight Cowboy (1969) -Streetwise (1984) -Erin Brockovich (2000) -A Single Man (2009)
If you have CC and are flying anytime soon, you can download ("sync") the video files so you can watch them on the flight without paying for wi-fi. 'His Girl Friday' had a lot in common with 1996's 'Twister' and apparently that's not a coincidence, it was a source of inspiration for the screenplay. Happy to be back and see the new Deadpool movie (jk... or am I???)

Enjoyed Thelma. Funny, not hilarious. Definitely sad at points. The thought of being old and alone is not my favorite thing.

His Girl Friday is a gender flip on the original The Front Page, which then got re-adapted again with Lemmon and Matthau (not as good as His Girl Friday.)

Matthau had some thrillers. Obviously Taking of Pelham 123. But you guys should watch Charley Varrick. The man himself said: “I have seen it three times, and am of slightly better than average intelligence (IQ 120) but I still don't quite understand what's going on. Is there a device we can use to explain to people what they're seeing?" One of those great 70s thrillers that, while not overly crass or cruel or malignant, maintains a more or less amoral perspective. I think that was relatively new to ol’ Walt.

Hes also in Charade, which is a Hepburn/Cary Grant thriller/romcom/drama all in one but I'd be lying if I said he was even in the top 3 or 4 performances in that movie. But still good.

Why am I, a 38-year-old who's been watching violent action movies since the age of 7, only now just seeing Hard Target? A lad who has given unnecessary and nostalgia-tinted deference to Face/Off and Broken Arrow all these years when there were superior (American) Woo movies like this all along???
(I specified American because I have actually seen Hard Boiled and The Killer.)

Charley Varrick is insanely good, he's just a total badass in that movie. I need to watch it again soon. An earlier movie I also like of his is Ride A Crooked Trail, with Audie Murphy and Henry Silva. A typical western in many ways, but if you like those it's a fun one for sure.

watched Deadpool 3 on saturday. It was good for what it was, but I'm not a fan of that Ryan Reynolds style of comedy. There were a lot of shoehorned "anti-woke" jokes that didn't make any sense. Overall I'd say 8/10, it was basically a nostalgia fueled movie and when it comes to comic movies, that's really all I want. Hugh Jackman in the comic accurate Wolverine costume was way cooler than I expected. I also loved seeing a bunch of deep cut comic shit. question about a cameo when Blade says "there's only going to be one Blade" and deadpool looks at him, what does that mean? Is he coming back for another movie?

Haven't even seen the movie but spoiler I guess since it continues with that line of thought.. The development of the new Blade has been a mess and thats probably just them acknowledging that by pretending the new Blade isn't gonna exist? Its certainly looked like that at times that it'll be cancelled but they're still going forward, a 2nd director dropped out, there's word that Blade won't even be the main character of his own movie, etc etc.

I’m stoked to check out DP3 this weekend. At a place where I just want stupid, low hanging entertainment and those films deliver that in spades

Can’t believe Miami Blues was never really on my radar. I knew nothing about it other than Fred Ward was in it. What a goofy, funny, slightly surreal time. Alec Baldwin’s performance kinda defies a good/bad acting binary because it’s so loopy and fun (which in my book puts it firmly in the “good” category). Laughed out loud a couple times. Also, Fred Ward is definitely wearing a fat suit through some of the movie, just around the torso. Man stayed fit until he died. God, I love him.

saw a little followup with Big Al from Carts of Darkness. He's looking and sounding awful rough. He's also the only one still alive. Ferg, the old grey bearded guy with the amazing voice died a few years back (alcohol related). Al was in a wheelchair, but the Carts filmmaker (who is a quadriplegic iirc) got him some money for a mobility scooter. Seems he's cruising around slurping beers and being a bit of a legend. Still has a sense of humour, living in his brother(s?) house. Took a sparkler or something to the eye and his speech seems to be slowed and slurred.
Anyway, if you haven't seen Carts of Darkness, it's all on youtube. It's pretty bleak at times but also very entertaining.
