It's very limited compared to Criterion but Mubi has a quality curated library. Get a free 30 day trial with the Kermode and Mayo link. mubi.com/en/kermodeandmayoCan't beat free.

Some of y'all might like Sean Wang's "DiDi", if you can find it.

It was a toss up for the limited release here and was hoping to see this and Sing Sing but the latter wasn't picked up by AMC around me. They had Eighth Grade and Mid 90's screenings amping up for Didi which was pretty cool.

AMC is doing a week long Dolby 20th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead at the end of the month. Wish they'd do that with Dawn of the Dead 2004.

Snyder is a dork, but that is an all timer remake. So many subtleties and not. I rewatched it like a year ago, and I never really realized the color change as things wen't to shit. I just really love that movie. More than the original. And that’s okay.

I just really love that movie. More than the original. And that’s okay. I was really hoping for it when the original came back for the 45th anniversary. The original 2 and a half hour ultimate cut on YouTube is worth a revisit this upcoming spooky season. It's a very very good A/V mix. No shame whatsoever in absolutely LOVING that movie. I've seen it probably 20+ times and one of the few Blu-ray collector editions I own. Holds a super special place for me as it was the first movie I snuck in with two buddies mid teenage years. One is dead and the other is in jail but we probably watched it like 5 times that Summer. It's crazy how strong of a debut that was for Synder who pretty much has done nothing of interest to me since. Still holds up: www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=dawn_rules

Got a ticket to see Cuckoo in 35mm tonight, but I'm pretty sure I can't go cause I got COVID. I feel better, but I'm sure I'll still test positive when I re-test myself in a few hours.

Feel better, Jared. (Or I guess you already feel better but the sentiment remains haha)
Might try to see 'Sorcerer' tomorrow at the Vista. Ideal viewing situation.

Tip for the Criterion Channel users: Navigating the app can be daunting. So many movies, what to choose. I've found using the letterboxd app makes it easier. For instance, for newly added movies this month there's this: letterboxd.com/criterion/list/august-2024-newly-added-criterion-channel/Then I can see what friends thought about movies before deciding to watch them. My cheat code is I'll usually just Sort by Average Rating/Highest First. That way I can cherry pick the "best" movies from a particular collection (or whatever is added that month.) If anybody wants recs from the app overall let me know. There's a lot of great movies available (some esoteric, some classics.)

I feel bad at the fact that I tested myself with what I guess was an expired test on Thursday (the day I felt the worst) and I ended up watching Trap on Saturday and I probably gave it to someone in the theater. I only tested myself again on Sunday after I told someone that I was having night sweats.

Only 9 months late but I finally saw Holdovers. Liked it a lot, Giamatti rocked as usual. I don’t think what is essentially a Christmas film needs to be 2 hours and 15 minutes but hey that’s me.

i always read thru what's new on criterion every first of the month and then go straight to the "leaving/expiring" section to see what's been added there - it helps prioritize what to watch

Kneecap was a blast. Can't believe the three leads aren't professional actors. So much fun and get to shit on British people for an hour and 45 mins.
Was not expecting it to be that much fun and also see Palestinian flags. 👍👍

I remember seeing ads in the paper for The Spanish Prisoner, thinking it was weird to see Steve Martin in a serious looking movie. Kinda nice to close the loop like 25 years later. A little stagy, but then again it is Mamet. Nice to see Campbell scoot as a lead.

Every time the Alien Romulus trailer comes on I get so psyched for that zero gravity acid blood scene. That shit is gonna rock. How has that not been done already ??

I didn't want to get excited for this movie but I can't help it. Also, the part in the trailer when they pull the facehugger thing out of the person's mouth/throat? omgggggg. Seems like this will be the most HORROR Alien movie. Hopefully they pull it off..

Gonna co-sign Mubi as well. They’ve got so much good shit you will absolutely never find on another streaming app, if anywhere at all. Also love the interface of the app and how they do a synopsis and a like ‘what we have to say about it’ section.
Also if you sign up at an intro like $8/mo and then go to cancel when it jumps they’ll keep you at the lower price. Done this multiple times.
