90s/2000s business model for horror had Roger Corman written all over it (without the style) - putting out loads of fairly cheap, no-substance schlock knowing they could turn a profit because yeah, everyone still wen't to the movies religiously
worst horror film i saw in the early 2000s was Darkness Falls - buncha people getting attacked by the tooth fairy lol
just looked it up and it netted $36.5 million in theaters

jumping back to terrifier talk: i thought one was a blast. it's so gross and mean and shitty. i have zero interest in ever watching it again probably terrifier 2 is unhinged and everything that's basically a fantasy movie is soooo stupid to me. it was very fun and i will definitely never watch it again very excited for terrifier 3

So yes absolutely; though in movie parlance you’d call it a chamber film, where everything takes place in one small location. I was looking at it in terms of being super creative as a zombie movie but TBH you’re 100% right that it’s creative in terms of being a chamber movie too. I can’t think of another where so much of the narrative is off-screen and delivered via radio broadcast like that. Nailed it. It has rewatch value for little tidbits with the set and utilize that aspect soooo well. You should watch Talk Radio by Oliver Stone with Eric Bogosian if you want that radio narrative. It was originally a stage play with Bogosian based on a real life story. You'd dig it but don't look into it anymore than that. Super up your alley. Well you’re right in everything you said because I LOVED Talk Radio when I saw it. It was a few years ago but I should revisit because I feel like it enjoy it even more now. Bogosian in generally is criminally underused. Phenomenal villain in Under Siege 2, a force in Talk Radio and then… did very little of note until the Safdies realized what they had and gave him a big role in Uncut Gems where he unsurprisingly killed it. I HEAR YOU RESURFACED YOUR FUCKIN’ SWIMMING POOL, YOU KNOW HOW THAT MAKES ME FEEL?!

There were still some really good remakes and original stuff from that era but it really was spaghetti on the wall and see what stuck. It was the Wild West of pumping out whatever with relatively modest budgets for any return whether it was in theater or direct/rental. It was the dying era of second run and smaller theaters that would show weekend night wacky shit for the sickos.

Very all around underrated Stone flick. Utilizing the psychological claustrophobia and making the studio feel smaller and more contained was soooo good.

I disliked Terrifier but didn’t hate it. Just an ugly movie to look at and so amateurish, and not in the charming way. Watched like 15 mins of the second one and hated it. Really wen't in excited for it, too. I mean to give it another try eventually.

Off the top of my head, dont think I could do a list for each decade except for the 2020s so far.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow Barbarian The Vast of Night (really straining as a horror movie, but it’s fantastic)

hey so there's a 35 mm scan of batman out there right now, and i gotta say it has got to be the definitive version imo.
love seeing that film grain, plus the shadows and overall darkness, wow.

I’ve only seen like five secs of the Alien Romulus trailer maybe 15 times, so I’m still going in somewhat blind. I’ll look at the ol tomatometer but not reading any blurbs or anything like that. Regardless of overall quality, I assume it will look good and have at least a couple very strong sequences based on the director. Would love it to be great though. It doesn’t really matter if it’s a great “Alien movie” that expands the lore, or conversely plays loose with the lore. Really, lore with any media property just doesn’t matter that much, it’s just something for terminally online fanboys to bitch about. Obviously Alien doesn’t command the same devotion from its fanbase and it’s a much smaller tent regardless, but obsession with like Star Wars lore, tone, and themes—and throwing a fit when the supposed fidelity of those things is compromised—is the most embarrassing ass thing ever.

I honestly don't even remember much of either Terrifier, other than the fact that it was over-the-top gory.
The first, I agree on the amateurish quality and felt like most of the movie was just a way to get to the kills.
The second was definitely more fun -- I think it was more self aware of what the movie was going to be. Not that the first wasn't, but I think they dropped any pretense of putting a story together.
I may re-watch soon just to remind myself.

it probably took place in the horror thread, but a convo from a few years ago got my gf and i into watching early 2000s/late 90s horror and it was a ton of fun. idk if some amount of time needed to pass to make everything click or it was an attitude adjustment or what. i remember when the house of wax remake came out and it was the peak of shitting on paris hilton but we watched it and had a surprisingly good time

My decade list (I have a problem whittling things down):
60s: Rosemary's Baby
70s: Alien (honorable: Suspiria, Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
80s: The Thing (honorables: Evil Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Children of the Corn, Sleepaway Camp, Poltergeist, Scanners)
90s: Scream (honorables: Misery, From Dusk till Dawn)
00s: 28 Days Later (honorable: The Host)
10s: It Follows (honorables: Midsommar, Suspiria, Get Out, Shin Godzilla, Raw, Cabin in the Woods)
20s: Barbarian (honorables: Godzilla Minus One, The Menu)
Some may not fit the genre, but I figured they were close enough.

More inclined to get into those but I've also never seen any LOTR, any Indiana Jones, James Bond, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, a bunch of stuff.

You should watch Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 instead of Romulus.

Demian Rugna has put out two horror movies in the past ten years that have stuck with me: Terrified and When Evil Lurks. Highly recommend both of those. Perfect mix of fucked up things happening without getting too schlocky.

Feel like a lot of people passed over Terrified because of the God awful poster looking like an Asylum direct to DVD release. It's very good.

It doesn’t easily date to a Hollywood era. Also the best movie ever.
