Prometheus and Covenant both have initially cool stories that completely fall apart with characters that make not just dumb but weird choices. But both are entertaining. Each have an absolutely 10/10 scene that’s both icky and thrilling.

Am I only one who thought the Fassbender on Fassbender fight was the most Paul W.S. Anderson thing ever?

Alien Covenant also commits the Alien 3 sin of just trying to wipe the slate clean, so hard to feel invested.

I kinda like Alien 3 but without the assembly cut it sure is messy. In my head, the story ends after Aliens. Kinda feel bad for Alien 3 cuz even if it had been better, nobody was gonna be on board with how it starts. The Aliens director’s cut, conversely, should be skipped because it does the very stupid thing of showing the colony before the marines land. agreed. THOUGH, it has that awesome scene with the sentry turrets. When I watched it on CBS in 1989 (which was my 4th time seeing it) I was like "where did that scene come from???" Also "Ripley had a daughter?" I actually think this is sweet af, no Hadly's Hope intro, Just some cool extra shit. -Ripley on a park bench. She learns about her daughter's death. -Robot sentries salvaged from the APC wreckage. -Prepping/testing the robot sentries. -Robot sentry battles one and two. -Ripley and Hicks exchange names. 100% the Hadley’s Hope shit ruins the directors cut. Too bad because literally every other included scene is great. I enjoy Alien 3 even without the assembly cut, even if it isn’t on the same level as the first two. My GF has never seen an Alien (or Predator) movie but is interested in Romulus. It’s probably time to make her suffer through them.

Gena Rowlands died. She was incredible in the Cassavetes movies, even in the ones I didn't think were so great.

Prometheus had some interesting ideas and beautiful shots, but completely fell apart into nonsense and the cut Ridley put out removes so much shit that would have saved it a bit IMO.
Does anyone have a link to that 35mm scan of Aliens that made its way online earlier this year? Cameron has been butchering his movies with all this AI “remastering” and the new (even on the old bluray) color grading has never sat right with me. I recently came across a T2 scan and it’s fucking amazing.

Saw Alien Romulus last night and had a lot of fun. Took some getting used to the cast (my friend a couple minutes in "is this a juvenile movie???") but Cailee Spaeny was great as expected. Loved the sets. I was a lot more invested in the first half and would've wished that to continue a bit longer over all the action sequences in the second half and learn a bit more about the colony. They did 1:1 copies of some famous scenes/images from Alien but it looked great.

Late, but here's a quick list off the top of my head. I tried to included little bit of everything so for example, I chose Suspiria for the 70's (to have some eyetalian horror) even though my favorite horror movie of all time is probably The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This was hard as hell and the list could possibly be completely different if I did it again in a week but I wanted to keep it at only one movie per decade.
20's Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 30's Murders in the Zoo 40's The Mad Doctor of Market Street 50's Creature from the Black Lagoon 60's Rosemary’s Baby 70's Suspiria 80's Sleepaway Camp 90's Idle Hands 00's House of the Devil 10's The Final Girls 20's X
I am very surprised to see so many horror heads not having anything pre-1960's, none of you people like classic horror?? For the early picks, I wen't a little off the map since they could all be Universal monster movies... I wanted to give some love to my man Lionel Atwill with Murders in the Zoo and Mad Doctor of Market Street.
I am already re-thinking some of these picks, but have to leave for work soon, man this was insanely hard... and fun!!
Edit. just realized I don't even have a John Carpenter movie on there and he's my fav director....

It's more like I haven't watched a pre 60s horror movie in a while so I need a refresher.
I'm not a single teenager in the 2000s watching sci fi and AMC on the regular anymore.

No shame, I do not like pre-60’s horror. Even then, peak interest doesn’t hit until the 80’s for me. My favorite subgroup is going to be occult/supernatural stuff, but what got me into the genre was gore.

Wasn't trying to shame people btw, just genuinely surprised no one was into classic horror.
If anyone thinks they don't like old movies, check out Murders in the Zoo just for fun, it's wild.

Could have easily been my 30's pick... been thinking about it fairly frequently, I need to watch it again soon.

Oh god, there were some problems I guess and stuff that was basically desighned to piss off true blue fans, but I liked it. One absolutely great performance, (mostly) good looking, entertaining. Can’t really say more without big dick spoilers.

Project Wolf Hunting was a pretty sick Korean super soldier flick on a ship. Buckets of blood.

I remember it being heavy on atmosphere with some incredible set pieces and a few genuinely scary moments, especially towards the end. I have it on blu-ray and your post inspired me to give it a re-watch sooner than not.
