Weekend watches, all of them not my thing with only one truly sucking: Miami Vice Immaculate Faces Challengers Drive-Away Dolls (sucked) I know Miami Vice has been heavily re-assessed and it gets a lot of love now. I never saw it when it came out. I dont get it. You can explain the advances in digital tech to me all day that Mann used but visually it doesn't look good. Also some straight-up very fake-looking backgrounds. As with Faces, I struggle with Cassavetes, this is my 5th directorial effort by him ive seen. Only one I really loved (A Woman Under the Influence.) Gena Rowlands is great in all of them and if it weren't for her I'd probably be harsher. Hated Miami Vice when it came out. Watched it a month ago or so, and haven't stopped thinking about it. I fucking loved every single thing about it.

Cassavetes is a big blindspot for me, need to change that eventually. The thing with him is there isn't any other director I can think of where I feel this way about them and yet I absolutely must and WANT to finish his filmography. It's very strange. He definitely stirs something up in me.

Damn I had to leave town for a couple days right after starting that "best horror movies of decades" discussion, loved all the posted lists haha
Saw 'Romulus' twice. The things that work about the movie (the cast, the setting, the horror) worked well! The thing that I disliked soured the entire experience. Not sure how to evaluate totally... like you're eating a p good sandwich and you find a pube in it. Do you keep eating or throw the whole thing away?

hmm might have to take a gander because I gotta tell ya, it did not bode well to me when the first thing you hear is the Jay-Z/Linkin Park mashup and not only that, that people in a Miami club would be DANCING to it? no thanks. Also closing the whole movie out with Nonpoint's cover of In the Air Tonight cover was ass. Is this a 2004 World Series game on Fox???

Watched 'Oddity' last night... movie had good horror atmosphere but the character decisions/choices had me going "wut" and as a result I couldn't vibe with it. You suspect there's a psycho inside with you... and you get into a tent? what in tarnation

Saw My Penguin Friend and it was an all ages packed crowd. Jean Reno is a damn PRO in it. Super adorable yet pretty heavy dealing with loss/grief. I found it a little heavy for children.
I'd go in without knowing anything of the story. I had a lovely time and sure as fuck wasn't gonna see Borderlands.

Getting close to finishing my David Cronenberg filmography, watched 'Map To The Stars'. While it's cool to see him do his Old Hollywood / New Hollywood typa movie, I'm happy he returned to his own style of sci-fi/horror with 'Crimes Of The Future'. Here's my top 10:
01. The Fly (1986) 02. Videodrome (1983) 03. Crash (1996) 04. Dead Ringers (1988) 05. A History Of Violence (2005) 06. Naked Lunch (1991) 07. Crimes Of The Future (2022) 08. Scanners (1981) 09. Eastern Promises (2007) 10. The Brood (1979) Honorable Mention: eXistenZ (1999)
I feel like all 11 of these are must watches. I'm due for a 'Cosmopolis' rewatch... (And before anybody asks, 'The Dead Zone' is fine but from what I can recall felt more like a Normal Movie than a Cronenberg Movie. It's been a while--15 years?--so I could definitely be wrong here haha.)
Not sure when 'The Shrouds' is getting released domestically, the wiki just mentions a France release in early 2025.

Humanist a Dracula Seeking Consenting suicidle Person was pretty good. It's the movie that Lisa Frankenstein wishes it was without the cutesy YA novel bullshit.

I just seen Alien Romulus last night.
Good film mostly, but holy hell the digital necromancy involved in bringing the late Ian Holm into the film was really fuckin jarring. I don't know if I just saw a raw cut or something but the CGI looked like absolute ass.
The fanservice stuff was uncalled for and took me out of the movie a couple of times, and the pacing in the first act was a drag, but overall I thought it was a good time.

Kinda seems like this is the sentiment... but with the movie being "successful" (box office-wise) I wonder if the execs will learn the "wrong lesson" and Disney will keep peddling this jigsaw piece bullshit. Hard not to be pessimistic about it... I'm wondering with the emphasis on the two ships, the Romulus & Remus, if the original script had both androids (Andy & Rook) played by the same actor. Seems like it's setup thematically?

The plot to Shivers has to be one of the most chilling things in all of Cronenberg's movies. Legit gives the shivers.

I feel like a jerk but I’m 10 mins into Furiosa and it looks like shit. I’m getting big time Hobbit vibes from some of the cartoonish cgi backdrops. Fury Road did not look anywhere near this awful.
