Damn I lucked out and got tickets to an early screening of 'Rebel Ridge' next week with "an in-person conversation with writer/director Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin), and actors Aaron Pierre and AnnaSophia Robb" Looks good:
hell yeah

i mean the focus seems to be killing women the chainsaw? scene is particularly aggressive I did NOT vibe with the first Terrifier because it absolutely felt like the director had issues with women. Obviously most horror deaths end up being women and there are plenty more violent than Terrifier but it felt very fucking mean-spirited and uncomfortable. The second one, despite being way more over-the-top violent did not feel that way at all to me. Lighthearted is obviously the wrong word but the violence at least felt much more absurd. Also helps that the final girl was a well fleshed-out character and written to be a real badass vs everyone in the first just being a hapless victim.

Also Alien: Romulus absolutely fucking rocked.
If you have the misfortune of following me on Letterboxd you’re getting this rant twice but I want to beat anyone complaining about fan service with a hammer. In general I feel it’s a VERY Reddit dork criticism of a movie but especially here. The movie was reverential to the OG but absolutely felt its own thing.
And when they stepped out of the framework of the OG w/ Prometheus and Covenant they were pilloried for it. People (not here really but in general) now act like they love those movies but sure as shit didn’t then. It’s performative bullshit.
What I’d love to do is take a time machine back to when Aliens came out to see what criticisms they had then about how it doesn’t even feel like it was part of the same franchise when now — despite the truth of that — everyone rightly loves it for the asskicker that it is.
I do think the movies in this series function WAY better with a horror bent than an action one and this gave that. Set and sound design were phenomenal. Some real fuckin’ tension and fright in this shit and if some callbacks to previous movies ruined that for you you’re a fucking wiener.

I think the movie would've been 100% better if they removed that line from it and didn't use the a.i. stuff (just have that android also be played by David Jonsson.) Based off of how they iterated the Romulus & Remus, I'm guessing the original script (before 20th Century Fox meddling) had both androids played by the same actor. I can't imagine the director or writer were stoked on the use of generative a.i. because of how outspoken they were on the practical effects (and boasted about them during the promotion of the movie.)
From the research I've done, it seems like 'Aliens' was largely received with positive reviews. (Ebert gave it 3 1/2 stars out of 4.) Like you said though, some people were mad it was more of an action movie than the slower paced horror original.
I'm not sure what stuff you've read about the movie (in terms of criticism) so I'm not disagreeing with your pushback, I just wish the movie didn't do that timely stuff (that is going to age like xenomorph blood on metal.) I did like the movie though, don't get me wrong.

Bottom line, I was entertained and completely dialed in for all but like five mins of the movie. Surprised it needing “to be seen on the big screen” hasn’t been discussed much. Visually and sonically, it’s why you go to the movies.

I fucking hate any use of generative A.I. but, unfortunately, that toothpaste is never going back in the tube because it saves studios money and that’s all they care about so I’m resighned to it. For sure would have been better to have Jonsson play both roles. I by no means think the movie is beyond reproach and very few movies are, but the criticisms I’ve seen of it on Letterboxd, social media and on review sites are insipid.

I saw Romulus last night. I thought the sound and set design were well done and captured the sci-fi/horror tone of the series without being a rehash. The design of the alien/human hybrid was simultaneously goofy and badass. The highlights of the movie for me were the two leads, the acid vagina, and the scene of Andy flying down the elevator shaft with the gun (minus that line delivery).

Fede decided on the Holms' AI face to honor the actor and give his synthetic the chance to appear twice like the other synthetics. He got the family blessing and they said he was the most proud of that role and felt almost blacklisted by hollywood later in his career.

Vincent Gallo has always been a try hard little bitch and he doesn’t even look cool in that Glassjaw music video.

I just watched Freak Orlando, this shit is insane. It's a loose adaptation of the novel Orlando, but shot like a Jordorowsky flick. Watched it through Cathode Cinema.

Man, I miss working the midnight shift because I would just put Cathode on our bigass monitor while we worked. I haven’t kept up in a year!

I don't know why it's taken me so long to see To Live and Die in LA, but holy shit that is top tier Friedkin steamrolling his way through a top tier crime movie in the best way possible. Willam Dafoe is brilliant and Wang Chung scored it. Phenomenal movie.

The director's cut of Napoleon is now on Apple TV, for those in this thread who mentioned they were waiting for it.

Somehow just saw City of God for the first time. I'll tell ya what...that movie's got a lot more in it than a kid's passion for photography.

Clicked on the og Dawn of the dead just to say “save to watch later” and ended up watching the whole thing. It’s probably the only movie I can watch literally any time and be satisfied

Furiosa was alright. Wanted to like it. Thought the narrative, characters, costumes, and sets that weren’t 90% reliant on cgi were good. But I couldn’t get over the awful green screen and car action shots that were completely, and awkwardly, rough cgi. A little montage of Fury Road in the credits just a stark reminder of the difference.

That movie hits all the nostalgia buttons for me but it still remains an all-timer.

All for free on YouTube due to that dipshit holding onto the rights. Fucking masterpiece.

Watching the Last Drive In anniversary marathon on Shudder here and there. First 3 of 6 movies: Slumber Party Massacre (feminist slasher parody), When Evil Lurks (Argentine religious body horror gore fest) and Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (super low budget long lost Japanese paranormal haunted freaks).
So much fun watching along for interviews and commentary.
I'm gonna watch every cut of Tree of Life to save my soul after.
