Finally watched Vice Squad and man was I missing out. An unhinged Wings Hauser as a maniac cowboy pimp hellbent on revenge loose on the sleazy streets of Hollywood in 1982 is hard to top. But him singing the opening song comes close. Top notch shit.

House of Games was David Mamet’s directorial debut. Anybody who watches it won’t be surprised by any plot development. It was good enough but Roger Ebert said it was the best film of 1987.

Anybody ever see the Giuseppe Andrews documentary? Never did, but I wanna know where that dude is now. To me, he’s the true protagonist of Detroit Rock City, more so than Sam Huntington.

I wen't on a bonkers reading spree of his books and appreciate him so much more than I did growing up. Arguing from a position of whether a film hit its target audience or not is a bygone critic position. He had so many moral hang ups that are much more clear in hindsight. Even when I disagree with him I find his writing enchanting. Miss em and Siskel every day. Kermode and Mayo fit that void for huge shoes to fill. I'm still a sucker for print and professional film critics.

He wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, so I forgive him for his disdain for Lynch and John Waters films.

As much as I disagree with his review of Freddy Got Fingered, it is one of the funniest things i've ever read

I realize that I didn't mention those were all movies released in 1987 that were better than 'house of cards' Anybody ever see the Giuseppe Andrews documentary? Never did, but I wanna know where that dude is now. To me, he’s the true protagonist of Detroit Rock City, more so than Sam Huntington. Yes. It'll answer your question of what did he after very well haha I don't think I'll ever watch any of his movies but the doc about making them was interesting I guess? Some weird outsider movie making that fringes on exploitation of non-actors haha

Stealing Harvard is definitely a prime example of every person involved knowing they’re making a shitty movie. The only passable parts involve Tom Green doing something stupid so the audience can momentarily mentally break away from the utter mediocrity that bookends his hard-rocking man child antics.

Any fans of Peter Greenaway on the board? Watched a few of his movies now, obsessed. Unique film maker, gonna try to watch everything. Have only seen Drowning By Numbers, which was VERY unique visually so I added a few of his other films to the watchlist but haven’t peeped any yet.

I watched the new John Woo 'The Killer' and it was pretty good I guess. On par with his recents 'Manhunt' and 'Silent Night'. Probably moreso the former. If you didn't like those, you won't be woo'd here. Coming to terms with the fact that we're never going to get another great John Woo movie. Oh well. Any fans of Peter Greenaway on the board? I recommend 'A Zed & Two Noughts' as well as 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover'. Like you said, unique visually with maybe some eventual influence on guys like Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, & Yorgos Lanthimos.

Fetal alcohol syndrome pays my bills. I look forward to surrounding myself with some FASD’s when summer break concludes on Wednesday.

Notes On A Scandal- I subject myself to letterboxd reviews because I like secondhand embarrassment and being able to predict the consensus on a movie and sure enough the number of CATE BLANCHETT IS MOTHER posts is disturbingly high for a movie where she fucks a 15-year-old

Damn I lucked out and got tickets to an early screening of 'Rebel Ridge' next week with "an in-person conversation with writer/director Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin), and actors Aaron Pierre and AnnaSophia Robb"
Looks good:
