Part way through Salem’s Lot and it’s very meh. Some nice shots and little moments, counterbalanced by a lot of bad looking shots and color grading that’s kind of annoying at times. Not much in the way of characterization. Bill Camp comes the closest to fleshing a character out. The extent of Lewis Pullman’s character is Man, Author. It tries to do a fun throwback with tone and performances at times, especially in the first 30 mins when random characters have a broad “I’m acccting” affect.

Stephen King movies are so hit or miss they are the horror equivalent of video game movies.

And the pacing is off. Most things happen too fast, a few things too slow.
Dunno why they didn’t try to salvage it with a good trailer and try for a 20+ million opening weekend domestic.

Salem’s Lot is maybe a 5/10 being generous. Feels like it’s missing scenes and momentum, which is super apparent in the last third. The characters feel more like ideas. Some awful cgi backdrops. Also not scary or tense.

A Real Pain was pretty good. Very reminiscent of Alexander Payne when it comes to blending comedy and drama. The movie is also a lot like Sideways. One of the best uses of "Oh snap" that I've ever seen. Laughing very hard at that in context of the scene.

Watching Gremlins with my niece. Joe Dante's filmography is so good. Nobody dislikes Gremlins. Gremlins 2 might be better despite being the more controversial one. |

Apparently Dead Alive goes for like $100 plus now! Ouch. That's one I still only have on DVD under the title Braindead... always thought Dead Alive was heavily cut but I could be mistaken as I've never actually seen it under that title. There's been rumblings for years now that Peter Jackson is (very slowly) working on the restoration of his older movies, hopefully they get new releases eventually. It's a great time to be a physical media buyer, the boutique labels especially are doing amazing work right now. Word just got out that Severin finally made a deal with Russ Meyer's estate which was thought to be impossible. Exciting times!!
