I watched the 2009 movie Orphan last night. I thought I had seen it before, but I got it mixed up with the Boy and the Orphanage, both of which I have seen. It was actually much better than I expected. I think I was expecting just an average tepid PG 13 late 2000s horror movie, but it had a lot more pathos than I anticipated. Not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but a solid watch. Will totally check out the recent prequel. I love love love it. Vera Farmiga baby. There's some pretty chilling stuff in that movie, given what's really going on.

I loved Skinamarink!! It took a minute to really get into it, but once it got me it got me good. Super tense and unsettling the whole way through. I definitely recommend catching it in theaters if you can

This last week I watched two horror movies on Shudder that I both loved. -Speak No Evil: A fantastic Danish flick from 2022 that had me and my friends absolutely losing our mind with anxiety. One of the only movies I've seen in a while that had me anxious in the way that Funny Games did. I actually really like the element of social commentary that I didn't find to be heavy handed at all. -The Queen of Black Magic: Only my second experience with Indonesian horror (Satan's Slaves is the other), and man, this movie is gnarly. I wasn't crazy about the last 10 minutes or so, but thats just a personal gripe. This movie is legitimately pretty scary and had an element of gruesome cruelty to it that I found to be very refreshing. Absolutely worth a watch. Dude yeah queen of black magic was crazy. It had such a dark and twisted vibe to it. Like I felt unsettled as fuck. Agree with you about the end BTW.

Sick is pretty fun. It's a pretty standard slasher and it takes a while before it gets good. The fight and chase scenes were pretty well-done since they hired a director known for action movies.

I thought Skinamarink was OK, but I can see why people would like it. It reminded me of being 5 years old and not being able to sleep, I just wished it was shorter.

Sick is pretty fun. It's a pretty standard slasher and it takes a while before it gets good. The fight and chase scenes were pretty well-done since they hired a director known for action movies. I'm with you on Sick and Skinarmarink. Sick was like Scream without the meta and the adrenaline got cranked once the fun got going. The director was the creative force behind the Black Summer series which explains the thrilling choreography. I liked that the protagonists did a lot of right things, yet the adversary never let them off the hook. Skinamarink was a cool concept with one of the most effective horror trailers I've ever seen, but it didn't justify the length of a feature. A short film would have been much more potent. I get that it's experimental, but the endless shots of walls, floors, and ceilings deflated tension and anticipation between the interesting moments peppered throughout. It demands a lot of patience with little reward. That said, I didn't hate it. I know why it lands with certain people and think if I saw this as a little kid it would have fucked my shit right up. But as an adult I couldn't help but think this made Eraserhead feel like a Michael Bay movie. Curious what this dude could do with a narrative, though.

I thought it was fun. Hyams is a beast, his Universal Solider movies are top tier action movies IMO, add in Kevin Williamson's best work since Scream and a brisk 90 min run time and this hits a sweet spot for me.

Reeeeaally enjoyed Skinamarink. I’m still trying to process how I saw this at the cinema. Insane.
That scene when the sister goes upstairs WAS TERRIFYING

i can't really figure out how i feel about skinamarink. i can't say i disliked it but can't say i liked it either? but i haven't stopped thinking about it in the ten hours since finishing it. it's weird.
it's basically a movie that replicates the first time you got scared as a kid in the dark. i thought the grain was annoying at first until i realized it tricked me into seeing things the same way staring into the darkness as a kid did. the sounds, the lights, the things that happen out of sight but you can somehow still see. also sick that it was 1995, and they happened to watch the exact same cartoon i watched over and over myself in 95. weird coincidence.

House of Darkness -- the lesser of Justin Long's 2022 horror output. The cast did what it could with the material but building tension doesnt work too well when theres no release, or the release takes way too long to happen and then it just feels anticlimactic

Yeah, I didn't really care for House of Darkness either. It was just Neil Labute doing a watered-down version of some of his older films but adding horror to it.

Watched Halloween Ends last night because We Hate Movies are talking about it on their next episode. Straight up garbage, though the kills were pretty great.

I found that from an interview with her by “grimmlife” on YouTube. The hosts were alright, but the interview was pretty endearing. I love her and am glad to see her back in any capacity, but I wish it was a project that would give her the same attention that Brendan Fraser got

For research purposes for a future podcast project i'm working on, I'm about to start watching a bunch of giallo movies. Other than the Argento/Mario Bava classics, what are some essential giallo movies I need to watch?

Not a giallo head at all, but Berberian Sound Studio might be relevant to your interests/the project at large.

Other than the Argento/Mario Bava classics, what are some essential giallo movies I need to watch? Anything with Edwige Fenech, and all of Martino’s. Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, All the Colors of the Dark, Case of the Bloody Iris, Torso, Your Vice is a Locked Room etc. Also, Fulci made some EXCELLENT ones. Don’t Torture a Duckling is probably his best, but New York Ripper is my favorite. So brutally sleazy. Lizard in a Woman’s Skin is great too. Some of the lesser-known ones are great too- The Fifth Chord, House with the Laughing Windows, Killer Nun, What Have you Done with Solange? Etc Between Arrow Player, Shudder, and Tubi, there is no shortage of great gialli streaming

Of the ones you listed, I've only seen Your Vice is a Locked Room, which I watched for a previous episode of the afore mentioned podcast project i'm working on. I'm still in the script writing project, but if you guys like long form history podcasts and horror movies, than I think you'll dig what I'm working on.

i don't think House with the Laughing Windows is a lesser known movie, is one of Avati's best horror/thriller.
