i didnt read the whole article and i saw the rest of it about how reagan fired 11k air traffic controllers. biden isn't going to fire the rail workers. he can't, strike or not. you can recall people from a strike. if you fire and ban them for life, they're gone for good. we're in a recession and we're in a supply chain crisis. also biden is a coward, reagan was a sociopath. rail workers should strike, the government can't fire them. there's a labor shortage. short of biden using active duty troops to manage the railroads, he's got nothing.

West Coast longshore contract is still being negotiated. Shit’s all real complicated and whatever someone says definitely will or won’t happen has to be taken with a heap of salt. Shit, I saw something today about how there COULD be disruptions in some real estate markets that will reduce the likelihood of rent increases, which seems counterintuitive.

tbh having zero paid sick leave is horrendous. like dental office receptionists have paid sick leave and these people are union. i'd be angry too. Partner of dental office worker here, no paid sick leave, she has to use vacation. A lot of small business tyrants don’t give sick pay or health insurance.

Mine isn't separate, I just get 3 weeks of PTO. I don't mind because they have to pay out PTO when I quit, they don't have to pay out sick time.

When I worked for the government starting in 2007 I had neither health insurance nor sick days. By I think summer 2009 the class of employee I was finally got sick pay, but not health insurance. We were at will but on call so they didn’t have to. Most of my coworkers were retirees who were double dipping and on Medicare so there wasn’t a lot of pressure to do anything different.

Idk if I’ve ever worked at a full time job that didn’t offer sick pay. In my experience, it's not super uncommon for union/trades/labor jobs to not have sick pay or vacation. I'm in the local electrician's union and we get neither of those things. Kind of blows my mind.

I dont know what rail workers are making but im sure its not far off. Hardly dental assistant kind of money. Its not an easy task getting the public to support a strike when your wages dwarf theirs. This is all devils advocate though, i aint no scab.

why would they vote down the paid sick leave like I understand they're ghouls but wtf is the argument against it? I'm, "they're ghouls" is the general reason, but to drill down a little further I'd say the ghouls' argument is simply

But negotiations are politics plain and simple. They can split a union real fast. Everyone refencing the air traffic controllers is missing the point that was the first time another union failed to back a striking union, so they got left out on a limb which is the only reason Reagan was able to pull that off.

My package is somewhere around that too when I turn out, but my buddy in tech makes more than I do while, by his own admission, fucking around for half of the work day at home and he got six weeks of paid paternity leave when his daughter was born. Somehow that isn't considered obscene. I think we might be pricing ourselves out of the market a little bit with the wage increases from our contract negotiations (I will never think that we make too much money, but the reality is that corporations exist to make money and will start looking to non-union shops once it hits a certain point), so I would really like to see raises starting to fund something for a PTO system. I've heard of other locals that have pulled it off.

I haven’t followed this too much but how come, like always, it almost 100% falls on the dems, when other than 6 Rs and all the dems, all Rs and fucking Manchin voted against the paid sick leave. Again, I haven’t followed much, so is it just Biden trying to push it all through?

Because the Dems have hijacked the negotiations and are steamrolling a bullshit CBA through in “the national interest”. Let them strike and let the process play out.

If the Dems were good at politics what they could have done was try to pass the CBA with sick leave, fail to get sick leave, then punt the entire CBA away and say “no sick leave, no deal” then when the strike happens the republicans get 1000% of the blame. Now the democrats will actually get branded anti labor by unions for breaking a strike despite the fact that republicans voted against paid sick leave.
I hate this party so much.

It might be misguided or confusing, but there seems to be some sort of strategy. I dunno, I had to do a deep dive on a big ole union dispute for work earlier in the year and the way all that stuff works (i.e, when to push, when to pull back, this pressure snd that pressure) is not all that intuitive
