Student loans and other forms of wholesale buttfucking naïve college students (on-campus housing, meal plans, etc.) is an actual industry. I don't skirt any debts I owe related to my college experience, and have been paying them for years up to this point. With that said, I'm obviously in favor of anybody who can get student loan forgiveness. I'm paying mine regardless, so why would I shit on somebody who doesn't have to pay theirs?
Keeping college students in debt actually works to the benefit of both the lender and college, because kids keep borrowing and stay going to school to keep their loans from accruing interest or going into collections due to nonpayment. There's also the ancillary benefit of keeping students in school and in fear of the real world (shaky job prospects, terrible economy, crushing student loan debt, housing crisis), thus boosting much coveted university retention rates. Just my two cents as somebody working in industry adjacent to all that shit.

Then you got the decline in public/private investment in workforce development overall. And, also, the decline in public funding for higher education created a number of perverse incentives in order for universities to retain a competitive edge. And, then, of course, the declining quality of K12 education and the increase in the size of the student body (and the perverse incentive to continue growing it at the expense of longterm flourishing) meant that there were more and more students deficient in reading, writing, and math who needed assistance (or a decrease in expectations and requirements to earn the degree). It’s a fucking mess.
