I want student debt relief because hard working patriotic conservatives should have to pay for my woke gender studies basket weaving degree. Hopefully they close at least a dozen more rural hospitals to cover it.

as long as there's inflation issues they will never forgive student loan debt. introducing that much disposable income into the economy would sink the dollar.

Maybe, but that spending power has been unleashed since the pandemic. Payments are still not required. So other than people choosing to pay it down nobody is really paying right now. It might fuck up the housing market even more because I think a sizable number of people will trade student loans for a mortgage.

Even if you grant the petulant moralizing about how “they took it they should pay it out blahblahblah”, it’s still stupid. There’s serious consequences when the state just simply allows massive amounts of collective private debt to accumulate (a sizeable chunk of which will simply never end up paid off ever), and you don’t have to be a pinko at all in order to see that. And a lot of the problems have the worst effect on local and municipal economies. .

Extrapolate that to any other segment of a consumer economy and you’re talking about 2.5 generations of people (gen x, millennial, zoomer) who will suddenly have hundreds of dollars a month freed up that would be able to circulate back into the economy. I’m also FOR student loan forgiveness but I do recognize the potential economic calamity that will come along with it. Idgaf about bootstraps or any of that shit. The pandemic ruined any chance of being able to forgive debt without crashing the economy. |
