Are there any schools in the US where the courses are rooted in eastern tradition? Like I took a Buddhist philosophy course at American University, but even then we spent a lot of time comparing the ideas to western religion and philosophy.

Like I took a Buddhist philosophy course at American University, but even then we spent a lot of time comparing the ideas to western religion and philosophy. my advisor was a specialist in eastern philosophy, Dr. Joel Feldman. I think it just depends on the professors. But the program was mainly Hindu and Buddhist stuff. The guy could read and speak Sanskrit and had studied all over Asia. Really good time, but it was a really small university, I'm sure you can find pretty robust eastern philosophy programs anywhere.

Re: education and eastern philosophy
My 9th grade history teacher was a young ditzy blonde girl and during our Eastern philosophy unit she assumed the nickname “Won Ton Wilson” (super racist) for some reason except she misspelled it as “Wanton” which drastically changed her nickname’s tone.

Perhaps I misinterpreted Mr. Assdan but I think both of you are talking about two different things. Having a course rooted in a certain type of tradition =/= the content of the course. Meaning: there are tons of Eastern philogophy programs but theyre still structured along a "western" understanding of education/structure/grading. Those programs are teaching you about the content of Eastern Philosophy but are they (content asied) any different from a Eastern European History program? I guess we'd have to understand what is meant by an Eastern philosophical approach to education to check if that was being implemented, or if that could even be implemented within the US education or higher ed. system.

But, yeah, there’s been a lot more interest in opening up the general intellectual history canon to include stuff that pretty obviously has a right to be there. It’s about as represented as anything else (and by that I mean 3-4 tenured profs and maybe a grand total of 20-50 professors or graduate students, maybe 5-15 people at a big conference). Mr. Foose’s point stands
