What is it? Because I see way more of Biden’s attention being focused on Ukraine than Jackson or Flint. Or an archaic American infrastructure in general. Changing complexion of the country and being poisoned by the religious right. They might say “they don’t care about us” but it’s more like “they don’t care about us more than everyone else” Fuck em. |

Libs: who cares about poor middle Americans? Also libs: why do they keep voting against their own interests? Part of the problem is that we fund a lot of local infrastructure projects with competitive federal grant money. Some states/municipalities/regions are better at making sure they get that money, and many areas in the rural midwest don’t have the set up for that (and their government doesn’t care). Moreover, there are a lot more opportunities for areas that meet particular criteria (“historically disadvantaged”). |

We need a much larger infrastructure investment law than the BIL and use some of that money to establish many more university transportation centers (every state needs at least one). Make major investments in robust rail lines, re-establish routine maintainance programs on infrastructure, assess the number of jobs reachable by a 30 min public transit commute and increase that significantly, etc. Continue to make it easier to establish unions.
Returning to the old, less centralized model of local and tribal technical assistance was a good move, but that won’t start to bear fruit until some years from now. There’s many more crucial infrastructure projects in local, rural, and tribal areas than can be funded with the BIL or carried out with the existing workforce.

I work in the nonprofit field. My MPH concentration is in community health and I can assure you that whatever you see on the nightly news fails to compare to what’s really going on in areas like Pine Ridge.
