There's certain types of argumentative styles that are nearly universal across public policy white papers today. Notably, references to human capital or something from that nomenclature. That way of looking at things is about 100 years old when classical economics had been dealing with a legitimation crisis because of a number of economic depressions across the world, and that legitimation crisis intensified during the 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, when Theodor Schultz and others published of papers using this type of language, it was still really harsh on the ears (particularly the idea that a college education is an investment in your human capital, etc.). By the 1970s, it gained ground and by the 1980s and 1990s it was pervasive. It's now accepted common sense, and you cannot succeed in making your public policy idea into a actionable program without using that kind of language.

The true believers think that even Friedman style neoliberalism is socialism. the basic underlying logic in neoliberalism is that the greatest source of economic growth and renewal is people's investments in themselves. P1: the greatest source of economic growth and renewal is people's investments in themselves. P2: Debt and excessive risk are two of the main burdens on (P1). P3: healthcare is a high source of potential debt for individuals. P4: People pay for healthcare via health insurance programs of some sort. Conclusion: If all the premises are true, then reducing the cost of health insurance programs would lead to economic growth and renewal. And state-administered universal healthcare is the most efficient way to do that. |

Temujin rocks. Your post really made me rethink my stance on that org. I was involved with my local chapter when the George Floyd protests wen't down. During our first rally shit was peaceful, we were marching, and a smaller unrelated group was getting rowdy a few blocks away. Most of the crowd wanted to avoid that area but for whatever reason the PSL Portland organizers lead us straight to the block where shit was getting rowdy and then straight to a confrontation with the cops when it was completely unnecessary.
