As someone who is strongly in favor of making America more pedestrian, bike, public transportation friendly, this sort of "gotcha" article, and creating a false equivalency between cars and guns/cigarettes/alcohol, isn't going to win anyone over or change anyone's mind. I don’t think there was anything “gotcha” about the article. That was one scholarly study mentioned, and it didn’t create a false equivalency. It just assessed people’s expressed attitudes and unexamined assumptions. It didn’t claim that one thing was equivalent to the other. |

My theory with McCarthy’s weird cocksure demeanor was that he was going to maintain his job is that:
- the dems promised him they’d back his speakership if it became under threat
- he cut a deal
- the GOP made their move
- the dems double crossed him knowing he couldn’t publicly say he cut a deal with them cause it would blow up his standing with the entire GOP
So he’s hard-rocking which tracks

I don't think he a cut a deal with Dems. I think he was banking on some blue dog/centrists to help him because of who the alternatives are and thought the 45 day funding bill got him some good will.

If there was a “deal” he had to have offered power sharing or something. If that’s the case maybe they didn’t trust him, maybe they think they can convince moderate republicans to cross over for Jeffries so they didn’t need him.
I think more likely the Dems saw this as good politics for them to cross the aisle and keep the government running while at the same time really bad for republicans who would spent the next month bickering and fighting.
