Isn't this last year's budget, and doesn't 9% for "international affairs" not even include weapons and aid for Ukraine and Israel? So you're basing your math on this year's aid package to Ukraine and Israel on last year's budget for NDD spending? I'm certainly not going to pretend like I understand something so esoteric as the US Budget, but that means neither should you.

What's everyone's views on people posting political stuff on their social media? Its a really hard thing to argue against because obviously it makes you look like you're not an ally but it always irks me for some reason

If I were being charitable I would say James K probably means to refer to discretionary spending, but since I’m not going to be charitable I’ll say that it gets a bit murkier because that’s just DOD money, and if you mean Ukraine and Israel, then obviously money spent on operations and management or Veteran’s benefits would be excluded.

Its a really hard thing to argue against because obviously it makes you look like you're not an ally but it always irks me for some reason There’s nothing horribly offensive about social media politics posting but its rife with disinformation and everything is presented too quickly for someone to come to a legitimate understanding. Like, I see people post about the number of vacant homes in the U.S. and Blackrock buying single-family homes as if that somehow magically explains why housing costs are soaring in major metropolitan areas. But it doesn’t. At all.

Its a really hard thing to argue against because obviously it makes you look like you're not an ally but it always irks me for some reason 99% of the shit people post is just the same trauma porn / Infographics / quippy tweet. Almost none of it is really that informative and almost all of it is just being played to an echo chamber.

Like all the people who were nonsensically mad at the NFL for that Israel ad even though all of the Super Bowl ads are controlled by CBS who also allowed a church of Scientology ad and an RFK Jr for president spot

So many people on my insta that make politically charged posts are people who did shitty in high school and were never curious about their world beyond their small town, reposting other peoples' hot takes because it makes them feel included now that being politically active is in vogue. Like, you're not some truthspeaker because you've adopted politically convenient viewpoints like putting on a sports jersey, and I'm certainly not obligated to take seriously the apinions of someone who flunked social studies and hasn't read a book since. The cult of the autodidact everyman besting the expert in America is one of the most annoying parts of living here.

"oh it's better than doing nothing I'm spreading awareness" it's like how fucking arrogant are you, like I hadn't heard of the middle east crisis until I clicked on your dumb Instagram post

I feel like the occasional political social media post is fine. Raising for a cause, maybe reaching for something people don't really know about. But you'll click on some people's instagram stories and it's like 50 posts a day about the same thing they posted about yesterday. Then their actual o-count is posting their very normal suburban day-to-day life.

the main problem with posting every single day the same type of posts is that eventually you're going to desensitize people to the subject and then they will be conditioned to gloss over it. like you're not spreading awareness, you're just being repetitive and tedious. it isn't helping anyone. you've been blasting the same FLOOD "location here" protest graphics for five months and not a goddamn thing has changed even a little, time to consider that what you're doing isn't working.

I liked when white women said they "toppled a dictator" after Trump served his full 4-year term but lost reelection

What's everyone's views on people posting political stuff on their social media? Its a really hard thing to argue against because obviously it makes you look like you're not an ally but it always irks me for some reason I don't have a problem with it, at least depending on frequency and the nature of the posts. People are political and have apinions and someone making a post about a topic or a cause one is interested in here and there is a-ok by me, especially if it's a shift towards a generally better attitude and awareness of the world. It beats curated images of salad bowls and dogs wearing socks all the time.
I mean sure it's cool to look down on people who are only now learning about Palestine, but at least they're learning about Palestine.

The fuck you need to know about Israel? We’re talkin about sandwiches, raw denim, high quality limited run $50 bootleg tees, spending your kids college money on another pair of $600 heritage workboots in a limited chromexel leather, and fucking niche streaming services. Going to the gym, lifting weights, and opting for an eating disorder instead. The fuck else you need to know about?

The problem is informative and nuanced is not the content people crave. And it wouldn’t make a difference even if they did. Motivated beliefs are a hell of a drug.

If superficial political engagement leads to actual political engagement 1/100th of the time, then it's okay by me I guess. I suppose that one could contrast that with the possibility of oversaturation only encouraging more apathy but also I don't care that much either way
