The handful of Amtrak trains I've taken have been trips to the DMV on a rail. There are people who actually PREFER to travel by Amtrak, which is bonkers to me.

The route I traditionally took got rid of Business Class cars recently, so you can't even pay extra and avoid the KingCobraJFS types.

To synthesize self-immolation and Amtrak, the last time I took Amtrak was from Austin to San Antonio and a passenger near me was talking to himself and holding a lighter up to his arm to burn himself. I snitched because I didn't want to be on an en fuego train in Texas.

i took an amtrak from seattle to chicago and smoked a bowl in the bathroom. shortly after there were security personnel going up and down the aisles so i spent like an hour thinking i was gonna get arrested.

turns out someone had died on another part of the train so that was a relief.

One time on Amtrak I must've sat in a seat where the car attendant typically sits, because some dude steps up around 5am asking if he could buy a bottle of water off of me. Lol. I had no bottles of water visible.

Oddly enough things felt... I dunno, more positive at least in my experience (I was a rage against the machine/rise against/food not bombs juvenile) because things felt focused.  Certainly that was just due to naivety and a nascent understanding of the real world, but it seemed quite a bit more black and white. It also seemed like a lot more people were clearly on board with whatever "counterculture" or opposition existed. Listen to System of A Down, go to an anti-war protest. Easy life.

 

Also you could use slurs and not worry about getting fired or kicked out of the local coffee shop!

Bush era was weird.  I wen't to a really large high school and most of my classmates supported the war.  Even at colleges there were way more conservative college students then than now.  Democrats were generally way worse about everything.  Also, Bush was probably worse than Trump mostly because his administration was more competent and effective and the worst things he did usually had broad support.

The Bush era was WAYYYY less bleak than shit now.

The climate wasn't nearly as crazy, the economy hadn't completely collapsed yet. People didn't quite have the grasp of the reality of the uniparty then (ignorance is bliss), and cons actually felt shame when it came to shit people threw at W and Cheney.
