The MTA is 50 billion in debt. It needs 25 billion in upgrades. If it was a corporation it would be in a debt spiral and liquidated. The congestion tolls, assuming the extra 1-2 billion in revenue was used appropriately by the MTA won't be meaningful (it would take decades to cover the upgrades, forget the debt load). Short of a federal bailout, the MTA is legit doomed. Ok? It's not a private corporation, it's a PBC that provides a necessary service to the most economically significant city in the world. The fact it needs more money than the charge would provide doesn't mean you should cut off a revenue source to theoretically win a few thousand votes for Congress. You almost sound like you're from Texas or something.

For the record: I am adamantly in favor of New York City going bankrupt and the city falling into chaos so that the rent will go down. I am more than ok with living in a 1970s NYC hellscape if it means I pay 1970s NYC prices and the yuppies abscond.

Maybe they should worry more about toll-beaters. The number of people with defaced/fake plates that evade paying tolls is ludicrous. I'd be more amenable to congestion pricing if they didn't lie about the environmental benefits. There will only be increased truck traffic through asthma alley in the Bronx, Ubers/Lyfts are largely exempt from the fee (its a lesser amount, only paid once per day) because the main advocacy group for congestion pricing is Transportation Alternatives, a group that has Uber/Lyft execs in their leadership positions. These people dont give a fuck about making public transit more accessible, they're about privatization and looking to expand the scooter program and add more Citibikes.

Up until fairly recently, SF BART was kicking everyone’s ass for Fare Box Revenues and now they’re up shit creek. They don’t need a federal bailout, but they could use what Fetterman and Van Hollen just introduced in the Senate
