Not trying to be flippant here, but what happens with musicians and music under communism? Can people keep or own instruments? Does music still get recorded/produced? How would I access or listen to music I like vs. what my neighbor likes?

well, according to michael parenti, under communism all music except sepultura and pete seeger will be banned. if you see or hear anyone playing anything else please notify your local red guard so they can deliver the perpetrator to gulag.

yeah of course people would keep their own instruments. they're theirs. as far as production of music goes, maybe it would be like books were at one point? at a point in time, the soviet union published three out of every five books in the world. as far as listening goes, while LPs or digital files might remain a commodity for some time, measures could be taken to change that. soulseek, but better.
you could be in a band and not have to worry about rent, food, that sort of thing. you know, the necessities.

Interesting you bring up publishing. Would the state publish dissenting views? Would there be a regulating body to determine what is or isn't published?

Depends what you mean, by dissenting. But as an example, I think this is where a lot of people get democratic centralism wrong. They take it to mean the party rules with an iron fist. But in reality, what it is, is that elected members in the Soviets (councils), or whatever body you happen to be referring to, debate on issues for quite some time until they reach a conclusion. But when the conclusion is made, the debate should be honored and it should not be deviated from. Within the party, there is struggle, but outwardly a strong appearance and line is kept. I know it's dumb to just toss a book out here like this, but skim through any of Haywood's accounts of living in the Soviet Union or even organizing in Communist parties in the United States and compare it to his life in the United States outside of the party. libcom.org/files/Black%20Bolshevik%20Autobiography%20of%20an%20Afro-American%20Communist.pdf |
