There's this photography master's program, tailored in such a way that it is very interesting to me. It'd take two years to complete, and it would be approximately $50,000. issa low-residency program so I would have to survive for two years off part time work, paying rent, travel expensives, art supplies, etc. There isn't really anything, "I want to do" that isn't related to this. I don't even mind if I end up becoming a teacher or something out of it, at least I'd have chased the dream. I just have a hard time seeing how the practical financial aspects of it work out in any real sense. I'd even be happy with the debt if I land said teaching job or whatever, it's just the journey of actually obtaining the degree that seems difficult. I guess what I'm saying is, even if I "fail" at making a career after school, I'd still be content that I tried. It's just how do I afford this shit? I currently don't have a car and that's helping.

I would love to get rid of my car. Realistically I could see this all coming into place by next January.

I love cities with reliable public transportation. Long Beach's is workable. Sometimes means shit takes longer to do or you gotta order something rather than go get it, but none of that shit compares to how much a car costs.

I worked as a brewer/packaging/cellar manager for a decade but parted ways at the beginning of the year. Going back to school to get a business degree and work for my father in law come Fall most likely. So financial advisor/stonks, which I was originally going to school for 15 years ago but stopped because I wanted to follow my passion of brewing... which tainted that hobby/passion. So fuck it going to go suit life and just make good money and reclaim a hobby.

Occupational therapist in a skilled nursing home. Lotta people don’t know what that is, but it’s basically a counterpart to physical therapy. I work on assessing an individual’s independence with self-care tasks (dressing, toileting, bathing, etc), assessing their physical/cognitive/behavioral deficits that are impairing their independence, and work on maximizing their independence in these areas. These are called ADLs, or Activities of Daily Living. This means I can also work on more than just self-care in instances, such making sure someone is physically/mentally able to use their tv remote or cell phone, or adapting that technology to be easier to use. Physical therapists work more on walking, balance, stairs, etc. in my rehab setting. We also have speech therapists that work on cognition, sequencing, swallowing, and speech difficulties.
A skilled nursing facility like mine (240 beds) is probably 70-75% “long-term” (permanent/lifer) residents that we will see for therapy whenever they have a decline in function, be it with toileting, dressing, wheelchair propulsion, etc. I also work on splinting to correct or stop the worsening of upper extremity/hand contractures. I see a ton of dementia, psych disorders, hip fractures, failure to thrive, general weakness in these folks.
We have maybe 25% short term patients, folks who were hospitalized, completed their few day hospital stabilization stay, but are unable to return home because they can’t fend for themselves yet or their family is unable to care for them until they become more independent. I see everything in these folks. Fractures of any and all kinds, spinal surgeries, brain injuries, tons of COVID, drug users with severe infections (very common, being in Philly), gun shot/motor vehicle accident victims, heart attacks, lymphedema, new amputations, etc etc etc. With these folks my job is to assess their medical history and present illness, assess their current level of function and their current deficits, assess their home discharge plan, and set/work towards goals to discharge safely.
A lot of days it’s cool and I’m constantly moving around. I see probably 8-12 patients in a day. I deal with vomit, piss, shit, blood, wipe asses frequently but that’s become second nature at this point. You meet a lot of awesome people and see them get better, which rules, or worse, which hurts. You meet a lot of terrible people and still have to try to make them better even as they curse you out or shit on you, literally and figuratively. Imagine dealing with an awful customer in retail customer service and then imagine having to rub lotion in between their toes as they berate you and then wipe their 300 pound ass as they’re actively shitting. Not ideal but whatever.
PROS: coworkers are cool, pay is great, flexible hours (I come in whenever I want without having to notify a boss and just have to do 8-ish hours), good vacation time, flexible days (can take off any day of week and make it up on a weekend no problem), meeting awesome and eccentric personalities, and feeling of doing good in people’ lives.
CONS: Terrible for-profit healthcare industry feels like losing your soul to work in, emphasis on productivity and insurance pressures stress us into ethical gray areas, seeing how poorly folks in homes are treated is depressing and the nursing staff in my building (and others) is ass, physically and mentally exhausting, and seeing folks die that I get to know on a very personal level sometimes over the course of years.

I work with people who have a duel diagnosis of a disability and mental illness. I'm pretty lucky that the people I care for are great and very interesting.

Was working at one of the biggest hospitals in the country in the surgical restricted area. Got burned out on that mid summer due to craziness and Coronaville. Straight up quit in June. Just walked in cleaned out my locker and called my dept manager.
Was unemployed for 8 months finally landed a government clerk job at city hall. Had also recently started taking community college classes again hoping to start a IT career where I can work remote and move somewhere rural on a lot of land. Northern New Mexico is the current place that makes my wiener hard.
Job is nothing exciting, just finished first week. Work with a bunch of old ladies, no interaction with the public, M-F 9-5 office job, union member for first time in my life. Hoping to keep my head down, stay in gub life and work my way thru school.

interesting to see folks’ different career paths and how they make living wages
I did marketing for six years; it was soulless so i left. Now i do HIV testing with homeless folks with a focus on injecting drug users. it's meaningful but pays dogshit so i'm taking classes to apply to programs to become a PA or NP by 2027. I did seven prereqs last year while working two jobs and it completely burnt me out. still have seven classes before i get in the door. If i survive and succeed I’ll be 41 with a license and 250k in debt, but there are gov programs that forgive a big chunk of loans if you work with underserved populations.

Also an RN. Going on 8 years. Have done cardiac stepdown, psych, and worked for a company in Portland giving wealthy people IVs when they’re hungover.
Currently a nursing supervisor at a forensic psych facility.
At the end of March I’ll have my MSN in nursing informatics. In my history I’ve done three Epic rollouts as a super user. That’s the most fun I’ve ever had with my job. Hoping to find a job as a clinical informatics specialist sometime this spring.
I’d like to take a travel nurse gig up in Alaska before I start, though. Covid pay right now is insane for travel nurses. Luckily I never sighned on with the hospital I work at currently. As a contract nurse my wage is negotiable with every contract. Having worked my way up to supervisor here it’s not bad. Pretty unique situation, most facilities don’t have contract staff in their management.

Yo I’ve been considering a switch into clinical informatics. Been looking for a way to get out of dealing with patients face to face or dealing with insurance pressures and other stresses I have in therapy. Do you know folks who have transitioned into that line of work from a therapy background rather than nursing? Is it something I can just take an online cert course for or is having a degree in specifically informatics necessary? Is pay/work-life balance good? Sorry for the questions it’s just something I started looking into like a month ago.

All good. What does an Epic rollout entail and why did you describe it as the most fun you’ve had at work in a while? Just tryna see what something like that even looks like in practice.

I've spent the past 7+ years taking over my family restaurant. It's been open nearly 12 years total and I worked part-time/seasonally for the first few. I feel like a fraud daily, I work too much, I don't make enough money, the past year nearly broke me and I've got an out in 18 months (our lease ends) buuut I don't think I'll ever close this place down willingly.
