Not sure if anyone else has this problem but I have a hard time reading fiction. Essays or short stories are a bit easier but I still feel like it's overly stylized. 10 people can read Bartleby the Scrivener and end up with 10 different interpretations. There's value in the ambiguity and discussion but I prefer nonfiction where authors are making concrete points. I mean, this sort of echoes the tireless debate between Platonics and Aristotelianism. ya should read Plato’s Pharmacy by Derrida, if ya haven’t already. Also ya picked up that Rushkoff book, which I think you’ll really enjoy because a lot of his thought runs parallel to some of ya posting, but holy shit I could not stand that book. I’m pretty sure it’s early on, but my eyes were rolling so hard when he talks about the collapse of the narrative. I'll check it out and see if my library has a copy but as much as I get into deconstructionism, I hate Derrida for whatever reason... I've always been more inclined to side with Plato than Aristotle though so... I've enjoyed specific parts of Present Shock but there were some serious problems in the few pages about narrative collapse in regards to certain TV shows. I felt as if he wrote it a little prematurely or lacked a certain conclusion to tidy it up. I fundamentally agree with the necessity of narrative for society but that chapter honked big time. It gets a little boring here and there and then I realized he was the guy who made all those PBS documentaries on consumerism and technology. I ended up putting it down to read Jacques Ellul.

Reading Ramp Hollow: The Ordeal of Appalachia by Steven Stoll right now (Fordham professor, what what). I'm only a little bit of the way through it, but I am blown away. It's one of those books that is so insanely researched that I just stand back in awe at how writers like this even do it. It draws parallels between Appalachia and 17th century Britain, dissects capitalism, goes into the treatment of Native Americans, and this is only the first 2 chapters.

Finishing up KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL by Anthony Bourdain now.
If you followed him at all, you can hear his very distinct voice while reading. Good read about his time growing up, becoming a cook, and his drug problems back in '80s NYC

Pretty gripping read. Really gives you an understanding of why people from C.America are risking their lives to get to the U.S.

Digging this so far. Its about a kid who wants to become a Soviet cosmonaut and the author writes in such a weird surreal style.

I checked out some ICP comics a few years ago and they were honestly really fun. Kinda reminded me of old Image/Top Cow stuff.

And on a less knuckle dragging note, I'm currently reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Hewlett Helter Skelter but Vincent Bugliosi. I need to finish the last book in the Hyperion trilogy but can't seem to get my hands on it which has bbeen annoying.
The Alchemist is a great book. I'm going through a bit of an existential crisis at the moment and this is helpful.

Violent J makes a lot of fart and dick jokes, so it's right up my alley. There are some good stories about random run ins with famous people (the Thom Yorke story is hilarious and there's a random run in with Paris Mayhew). It's also cool to hear how much these muchachos busted their ass to get their name out.

I'd also check out the Celtic Frost book Are You Morbid? it's seriously one of the funniest non fiction books I've read in a while.

Just finished book 5 of My Struggle by Knausgaard this weekend. Excited for the final book release next month. I initially felt like it might be some hyped up pretentious trash by someone trying too hard to be edgy, but I couldn’t put it down once I started. Good books backed hard
