2022 is the last year for a full solar credit in MA. So, this year's big project will be panels on the roof with a battery backup. If I'm feeling really baller, maybe adding a metal roof first. Speak on this -- I need to replace my roof this year Wish I could but I'm not yet qualified. From early research it's a TON more $ than an asphalt roof, but it'll last forever.

Zillow has my house at almost 100k more which I refuse to believe.

Our Zillow estimate is almost exactly 2x what we paid for our house 8 years ago. Totally bonkers. We'd need to move another 20 miles further outside Boston to find similar now.

There have been three or more homes on my block that have gone up for sale for $100-150k more than we bought ours for in the last year, only for those homes to immediately be put up for rent. It should be illegal for investment firms or hedge funds to purchase single family homes. The price of homes in America is completely artificial. Apparently Zillow also buys up houses for over market value in order to drive up comps and then sell turning huge profits. Housing bubble/crash here we come!

our house broke $1.1m valuation recently. Thinking about getting out of LA, selling up and just moving somewhere cheap with some land.

You California people should be selling your houses to move to the Midwest and live like gods for the rest of your lives. You could have Chili's and Applebee's every night for the rest of your lives.

The dream tbh. So crazy how affordable cities are like even Chicago isn’t that expensive relative to almost anywhere on either coast.

My house has quadrupled in Value since I bought it in ‘17.
Thinking about doing some major renovations, turning a half bath into a full, redoing the full bath, and a full kitchen remodel.
Is a home equity loan the way to go or what?

Is a home equity loan the way to go or what? If you can get a good interest rate, which you might not see better than what we've got right now for a bit as they're climbing, then for sure. My parents used their home equity line for nearly every big purchase for fifteen years with no issues. You just can't get carried away with it.

Similar to other folks that bought over the last few years, we gained a stupid amount of equity. We're listing our place this week and IDEALLY finding something at the same time. The whole thing feels like a shell game and ridiculous--I still can't believe our home is valued at what it is. Anyone else doing this?

The most rewarding part about being a home owner is when you update your household appliances and get to rent a U-Haul to transport all your old appliances to the nature preserve for dumping.

Yeah we get calls every week about selling and our Zillow estimate keeps going up. We are off one of the worst main roads in the city in one of the only non-gentrified neighborhoods remaining but the house looks good on paper and is technically 15 minutes from downtown.
Selling would mean paying way too much for something nicer or moving someplace significantly worse. Pass.

I think I said it in this thread, but the only way it makes sense to sell is if you’re moving to somewhere with a cheaper cost of living. Walking away with $100k will go a long way if I were to leave NY, but staying would be a lateral move.

I was doing field work in a national forest and found a pile of old appliances at the base of this beautiful 50 foot waterfall. It was in a remote area with no road access, so I could never figure out how they got it there but admire the illegal dump game dedication.

Think the same thing here in CT. Might get a few quotes to see if it’ll be worth it. The battery back up would be key with how much we lose power around here.

There’s a nature preserve with hiking trails around here that has a bunch of old cars scattered about. Absolutely none of these trails could handle any type of vehicle, yet they’re found on cliffs, down embankments, and even wedged between trees. Respect.

I just got solar installed and I wanted the battery backup and the guy talked me out of it saying that the tech isn't there yet and the thing will be an expensive boat anchor in 10 years etc

How do you figure out if solar is worth it? Just what your pay for electric vs. what you'd pay on a loan?
I need to have my roof replaced this spring already, so thought it might be a good time to consider panels too

How do you figure out if solar is worth it? Just what your pay for electric vs. what you'd pay on a loan?[br I think in short, yes, that is a basic understanding and compassion. However, depending on your state, there are various incentives and tax breaks to factor in. I know here in CT, the major electric company will actually buy your unused power created from solar in some capacity. Best to have some companies show up and break it down, although I dread all the sales pitch crap.
