Blow The Man Down - Feminist driven Coen Bros worship, Margo Martindale is fucking great in this. Character actress Margo Martindale?

I'm reading David Lynch's book on meditation and the creative process and he mentioned Kubrick's Lolita being one of his favorite movies. I'd never seen it, the concept always creeped me out so I avoided it. Boy what a great movie. It definitely did creep me the fuck out but worth it. I like that all the untoward stuff is off screen but the consequences are all onscreen. If it was made today the Professor would be an antihero and there'd be gratuitous sex scenes.

Second day at AFI:
Family Matters - Pretty good Argentinian family comedy-drama that was some very funny moments, but I felt like something was missing.
The Science of Fictions - Premise sounded like a fucked up Buster Keaton film, but it's a tedious parable on the idea of "fake news". Did like the use of 1960's Indonesia as the backdrop for this.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire - Very solid, probably is going to have the best final shot of 2019.
Saint Maud - Fucking awesome. Imagine The Exorcist or God Told Me To with Bergman's religious existentialism. Fresh entry for possession horror.

PARASITE is the best. I absolutely loved that ending omg. It’s something he’s done kinda before in MoM but shit, crazy good. The subject matter of class can’t really be done anymore or better after this, at least in regards to 2010- going forward until something changes.
JOJO RABBIT - damn blew me away. I see why it’s winning audience awards. I literally saw it twice yesterday... in the same day. It’s damn hilarious. The opening 5 minutes is some of the most energetic and funny stuff of the decade. I wasn’t sure about it - the trailer does it no justice. It only has a few minutes that are Moonreich Kingdom, the rest is magnificent and wholly original. Every time Taika shows up on screen, the audience is busting with laughter before he even says anything.

The Irishman is great. It never felt as long as it's running time. Joe Pesci is fucking perfect in it.

AFI Day 3:
Deerskin - Pretty bonkers, loved the last 45 minutes. Pretty much what you would expect from Quentin Dupieux
To the Ends of the Earth - Anxiety inducing, but could've been trimmed down. Tries too hard to not brand itself to a single genre that it comes off unfocused at times.
Anne at 13,000 ft - Easily the best film at the fest so far and I don't think it'll be topped (seems to be the general consensus from people I've talked to). Imagine if John Cassavetes made a film about someone who suffers from generalized anxiety and depression. Funny and heartbreaking.
Jallikattu - Style over substance. Cool ending and there is enough humor to make this watchable. There is this "primal carnality of man" theme that was tackled in the final moments, but this would've been better if it was utilized throughout the film.

That's funny, I just watched this like 2 weeks ago and wasn't really that into it. The book is a favorite of mine but idk the movie was kind of vanilla and not because of the lack of X rated shit or whatever. The book does such a good job of making the narrator unreliable, evil, and yet sympathetic? The movie just felt like a dude into a teenager but it didn't really dive deep into him as a monstrosity and in fact it kind of felt almost like he was portrayed as a normal romance protagonist. I mean obviously he deals with the paranoia of the situation but idk. Probably one of the more unimpressive Kubrick films I've seen but it could just be the cliche book vs. movie experience and also I'm uncultured.

AFI Fest Day 4:
Clemency - This one is growing on me the more I think about it. The opening and closing scene were both so powerful that I was kinda bummed everything between it didn't reach that level. Everything in between is too cold and detached, but Alfre Woodard gives a great performance.
Bacarau - Easily the most fun film I've seen at the fest. A Brazilian offbeat take of The Most Dangerous Game. Plays like a lo-fi sci-fi western along with some occasional Tarantino level violence. Udo Kier was so damn funny in it and the Q+A with him afterwards was insane/

Sweetheart was a nice tight little movie. 82 minutes, all killer no filler. JD Dillard continues to impress after Sleight.

TubiTV has quietly amassed a real nice selection of movies. Watched Tenebre on their last night, definitely up there with Suspiria and Deep Red.

AFI Fest Day 5:
Idol - Korean political revenge thriller that starts off great in the first half, but gets too off the rails with the overabundance of plot twists.
The Planters - Wes Anderson/Jared Hess worship for boomers. Utterly obnoxious.
Selah and the Spades - Nothing about this was bad, but I had no connection with it at all.
Beanpole - Bleak post-WWII Russian drama, I like.

The trailer for A Hidden Life gets me teary eyed every single time I see it.
This year may've been somewhat lackluster throughout but goddamn it appears to be finishing strong
edit: Jojo Rabbit was a total surprise. I loved it. I had assumptions about the shift from Wes Anderson lite to what the film ultimately is. I’m glad those assumptions were validated.

Parasite was everything everyone said it was. I think it’s my favorite for the year. And I’ll be thinking on it for a while.
And not to be all TMI in here, but I think this movie had the first “sex” scene I’ve ever seen that actually kinda got me worked up in the moment.
Movie was so good.
