CHALLENGERS
second best movie of the year so far
the Reznor/Ross score goes so hard.
Whole movie is great but man Luca Guadagnino goes full psycho mode near the end, wildest camera choices and shots. A true maniac.
Movie is so elite it's going to singlehandedly convince Gen Z that horny movies are good, important, etc.

Love lies bleeding is cool. The last act, especially the last like 15 minutes go absolutely fucking haywire, but I liked it.

The Voyeurs - boring, stupid plot and stupid characters. The final twist was nice but it didn't saved the movie IMO.

I thought Challengers was pretty good. The core of the story is very predictable, but only elevated due to non-linear presentation, good performances, and a solid score. Slo-mo overload.

Seeing uncut gems on the big screen again was great. I think I like it more than ever. I’m not a huge sandman fan whatsoever but his performance in that is fantastic imo. It’s so stressful but I’m somehow laughing at every line be delivers. KG is great, the casting is phenomenal, I love all of the random side characters and Julia fox’s big fake ass. It’s so good man. I always think he’s somehow gonna win big and escape all of his problems, even when I know how it ends. His life is completely spiraling out of control but it’s a great ride
It was awesome seeing Alien in a theater for the first time. 45 years later, it looks and sounds better than just about everything. It’s so well done and a villain from Geiger’s brain is like the scariest and hardest shit imaginable. It also opens with a little q&a with Ridley and the guy who’s directing the new Alien movie that had some pretty interesting behind the scenes stuff that I wasn’t familiar with
Movies rock 👍

I watched Vital (2005) and I loved it. Truly an incredible film (like all of Tsukamoto’s others that I’ve seen). It’s like someone took all of my favorite things and threw them together

Saw Eyes Wide Shut in theatres over the weekend and have just been deep diving everything. Aside from all the conspiracy stuff I love it’s just masterful filmmaking. The dance sequence with Kidman is some of the most beautiful stuff ever made.

Man, now I want to see Challengers tomorrow. I enjoyed Civil War. I thought the pacing was good and kept me pulled in the entire time. Some goofy dialogue and I am not sure what the message was about journalists, but overall I had fun.

I watched the five hour version of Wim Wenders' 'Until The End Of The World' and it was worth it. Never seen a movie like it. Curious what 2 hours were trimmed exactly. Felt influential on the look of 'The Fifth Element'. Robby Muller is so fucking goated, how does he make Earth look like that.

Civil War is in my apinion just an anti war film told through the lens of war photographers. I feel like Kirsten’s line about sending a warning back home was kind of the crux of it all.
Also, Americans are dumb af morons who wouldn’t even know why they’re killing each other if something like this did pop off. This country is so dumb, man

I think Garland absolutely intended to send the message that civil war in this country will end up messy and incoherent, among other things. For him it is meant to be taken as a cautionary tale. There’s no underlying message about journalists, the dehumanization PJs can often become susceptible to, etc. A lot of folks out there are assuming it’s a critique of journalists, it’s not. It’s really just showing how murky, undefined, and nonsensical things could become in a worst case scenario.
I appreciated all the ambiguity. As someone who worked as a photojournalist for a long time, I love that he made a film focused on the journey of PJs/journalists/news people. I just wanted to a lot more out of it. I’d have liked another hour at least.
I don’t need the fine details of what plunged the country into CW. He allows reality to fill in those gaps, and I think that works. But I wanted to know the main characters more. They felt too much like caricatures to me. And I honestly thought the ending left a lot to be desired. The choices of the characters, mainly one, felt a little womp womp, but it’s whatever.

I understand how/why "normal" people would be oblivious to what's happening, the narrative (per se) of a war happening in real time around them, but in this we're following journalists. Aren't journalists the ones who turn current events into a story/attach a narrative? & to act like photography is completely an impartial, unbiased source of information is not true (imho)
Not sure if you've been following the Alex Garland interviews in the past couple weeks but they aren't helping this movie at all. The guy is kinda deflating the whole thing, he should've just shut his mouth and leaned into some type of ambiguity.
Beyond all that stuff, with the message, the tone was just strange. It wasn't natural, it wasn't heightened (sci-fi, or even like a genre movie.) Obviously if you guys liked it you're gonna disagree with me but the whole thing just felt like such a mess.

Journalists in this film are essentially nihilistic, and totally neutral observers. The film exists through their lens because it’s how the modern world already works. Journalism on its face is impartial, what the power who distributes what’s documented does is an entirely different thing altogether. Not to say there aren’t ideological pens and cameras out there, of course there are. At the end of the day, these are four people simply chasing the story as it comes. There’s nothing that says they have a grand intention to shift any temperature so much as it’s about the thrill of chasing the story and trying to make sense of everytning. AND… Be the first to break.
These characters are just a vessel. It’s not that deep when it comes to PJs etc. It’s a hard, cold, miserable job. If it says anything about those characters, it’s surely that.
I didn’t like the movie. Felt like a disjointed, incoherent at times miss. Not mess, miss.

I guess that’s what I was left wondering. Was it saying something or just kinda ambiguous? I haven’t watched any of the interviews with Garland so idk what he said. I liked it, I just wasn’t sure what to make of it totally.

we watched Youth Without Youth on criterion tonight because it was expiring and i found it odd i had never heard of this Coppola film - probably just me
funny that it has Bruno Ganz and also a sort of Wim Wenders vibe, and also feels like it exists in the universe of the Godfather
not sure the movie was all that great but the story/source material was very cool

Monkey Man should've been about 30 minutes shorter and I wish some of the fights didn't have those "Bourne" style cuts and speed ups.
