I like Star Wars but have never understood the weird cult-like fandom. I get that people can develop really passionate feelings for stuff but... it's still just movies. If you're a grown ass man still applying the virtue of Star Wars allegories to your every day life, or even getting weepy over what "they've" done to "your" franchise, you might as well buy an annual pass to Disneyland and dress up like the fruits below because you are a dummy. Surprising take to read when we are posting on what is essentially a hardcore music forum. Sometimes things just resonate with us. I've been a fan since I was four and I can tell you that I've literally never once thought, "What would Luke do?" or any dumb shit like that in my life. It's just fun. It has an important place in my life and I view the collecting, reading and discussing as a hobby more or less.

I mean, great, but then you wouldn't even be categorized under the "weird cult-like fandom" I was referencing in the first place.

The part where you said they're just movies seemed reductive to me, as if there's something wrong with anyone who takes them to be more than that. If that wasn't your intention, it's all good.

But they ARE just movies. And if you're trying to make them more than that then there probably IS something wrong with you. And for reference I have been a huge fan since I was a kid.

There are some different levels of fandom. I really draw the line at the nerds level of people who say shit like "Luke wouldn't do that". Or, "force healing is cool, but force teleporting is not NOT possible". Like why even venture to the point of thinking what is technically POSSIBLE within a sci-fi universe? It's so overboard and stupid and its those people who are going to be disappointed the most every damn time.
Basically ive had to just sit back and realize they're fantasy movies made for entertainment.

I just think that's a weird position to take. Following that, music is just music, art is just art and there's apparently something wrong with you if any of those things mean something special to you. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this. In most ways, I think I'm a mature person, and then I think about how I'm almost thirty and still following things from my youth like Star Wars, Godzilla or whatever else. Is there something wrong with that? I don't think so. I'm an extremely cynical person and these things still give me a little bit of enjoyment in my life. I look at people like my parents who have no legitimate hobbies or real interests apart from drinking to unwind on the weekends and I just don't see the point.
Definitely open to the position that there are at least a few things wrong with me though.

Also I want to say that as a huge Jurassic Park fan, the new movies are the ultimate kick in the dick. Star Wars fans really do not have it that bad (saying that as one). TLJ may be disappointing (at times IMO), but it's nowhere near as bad at The Lost World 2. What a complete wreck.

I meant Jurassic World 2. It's so bad. Jurassic World has some moments. But 2 has ZERO redeeming value. Just dont watch it, ever.

I mean I think y'all are both right. Obviously a very human experience is being moved by art, developing a relationship with it, etc. We all experience that in many different capacities. I definitely know that feeling of frustration when something that is special to you seems to have its integrity/magic ruined for seemingly no reason. That being said, Star Wars has always been an insanely corporate box office franchise. I think if you are taking the direction of the franchise personally and letting a bad Star Wars movie negatively affect your life or that you have any actual creative ownership over it then you need to take a step back. Think about what Hollywood and companies like Disney really are. Not saying anybody in this thread is doing that but reactions to Star Wars content can be pretty insane and at the end of the day it's like bro.... This has always been a money making machine, not a bastion of high art.
I'll always love Star Wars and feel a special connection to the original trilogy and the amazing universe that it created \m/ It was lightning in a bottle. The EU is still fun and I'll probably always be checking out new Star Wars content regardless.

I just think this trilogy has been a mess because old star wars got in the way of new star wars and two directors visions butting heads.

The new movies could have used waaaaay more questionable alien designs based on negative stereotypes of minorities.

One of the reasons my libertarian coworker said he hated The Last Jedi for was cause of "forced diversity" .
He probably fucking loves this movie.

Other than that, I have never heard "conservatives" complain about *forced* diversity. Force diversity, right? Even if some morons did, fucking boo hoo.

It was about as good as it probably could have been, all things considered. Yeah there's too much going on but that made it pace better than what I'm sure what the alternative: long useless dialogue scenes between rey and finn bonding about being orphans or whatever garbage.
