JJ can direct the film but for the love of god don't let him write the fucking thing.

I keep coming back to this because it is straight up nonsense. TROS was pure JJ. He made his movie as if TLJ didn't exist. Like, what are you even talking about? I will agree that not having the directors work collaboratively so they could put these movies out at a blistering pace was why these movies don't work as a trilogy. TFA set shit up and asked interesting questions. TLJ came in and said “YOU WONT SEE THIS COMIN” to answer most of it. TROS came back and said “god dammit bitch you ruined it let me uh try to uh fix it” and the result is terrible mess. The fact that it happened under Disney’s watch is hilarious and embarrassing. That all being said, TLJ is a bad movie and as bad of a sequel to TFA as TROS is to it. What they did with Rey, Snoke, Kylo, Luke, Hux and Leia was not good. The arguments you’ve come up with to justify it to yourself aren’t gonna convince me otherwise. That movie felt like current day WWE writers came in and helped write the fucking thing. Well needless to say I disagree with you. I guess leave it at that. If you think JJ had anything planned whatsoever with the 10,000 loose ends he left at the end of TFA, or that it would be at all satisfying to have each one of them REVEALED (which is literally what he did in TROS to disastrous results) then I don't know what to tell you. TLJ advanced the arcs of the characters, gave us good, earned emotional beats for each of the ones we give an actual shit about (if you have even a single solitary shit about General Hux then what the fuck are you doing? Did you weep when Grand Moff Tarkin died? How about the numerous choked-out admirals?) JJ introduced a zillion new characters and tried to give them all screen time and a bare-bones emotional tug and the result is what we got in TROS. It is what he does.

The recent trilogy was fine. Considering it's a family movie and children make up a large part of the fan base... it's only going to be so good and some of the complexity you guys desire is going to be pushed to the wayside. JJ Abrams is a big name franchise director and that's exactly what Disney wanted and he did exactly as anyone would expect. The Rise of Skywalker was entertaining and Babu Frik is my boy.

JJ introduced a zillion new characters and tried to give them all screen time and a bare-bones emotional tug and the result is what we got in TROS. It is what he does. Do we need to spoiler at this point? Definitely agree with this. TFA was good in a nostalgic fun way, but like you said it had a million loose ends and I guarantee JJ had zero plans for how to tie them up, it’s kind of what he is known for (Lost for example). RJ came in and threw that out the window, in my apinion for the better. It subverted expectations on a good way, it made things unpredictable, and in my apinion set up a better story. Clearly JJ wanted Rey to have some bloodline that made her who she was, that’s predictable and has been done to death, RJ came in and said fuck that she is no one, anyone can have these abilities it doesn’t have to run in your bloodline (he says it again at the end of the movie with the kid using the force to grab the broom). I personally think that’s a better direction. And in the end, Rey being who she was, was totally inconsequential to the story (which sucked by the way). ROTS was basically just nostalgia fueled horse shit. RJ at least tried to make the new trilogy it’s own thing, JJ just rested on the laurels of the OG trilogy.

Shout out to Gareth Edwards for making the best Star Wars movie of the last 39 years 100% agreee with this. In all honesty it’s probably my favorite Star Wars movie period. But full disclosure I didn’t grow up on the OG trilogy and never really cared about them that much.

I still haven't seen Rogue One and I consider myself a Star Wars fan. Fucked up, I know. Watching that might just be how I ring in the new year tonight.

Mandalorian and Rouge One owning the Star Wars franchise these days. They're both just so dirty. All of the Episodes are desighned for broad appeal, but that's not always war. These are dirty. They're gritty. Not everyone's going to like them, but I LOVE them. The Clone Wars cartoon digs into that in the later seasons, too.

the new star wars may be pop culture MAGA in that its logically and factually awful but a deep seeded loyalty forces you to defy both the facts and logic in order to continue loving something objectively awful

Was the og trilogy mass appeal though Harrison ford didn't even get it and you were a nerd if you liked it.

I really liked it. Then again, that's a subjective matter. Truly not being a smart ass, but what did you like about it? I liked a few things about it in like small moments, but as a cohesive movie I found few reasons to go back to it.
