currently binging on some Hammer horrors. just watched Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, and it was fucking BAD ASS. i'm in love with the vibes of these movies. so lush and colorful. and Christopher Lee rules of course. watching The Mummy (1959) right now.

Trying to show my stepson Halloween, the Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. for the season and I'm getting shot down. He's twelve years old. I was definitely watching these at his age. The violence is dated-looking and I can maybe understand the argument that there are tiddies in these movies, but he also has a phone and can Google "pichers of girls real vagina" whenever he wants. Are we raising kids to be too soft these days or was I raised poorly?

Definitely too soft!! I can see The Exorcist maybe being a little boring for him, but the others are shown on tv pretty regularly. I was definitely watching stuff like that at that age and I turned out totally well-adjusted and fine

12 is old enough to see everything imo. I saw horrific things when I was like 7 and I turned out badass 👍

There's like no blood in Halloween. I dunno, does the kid actually wanna watch them or is this a Zakk Wylde naming his kid Rhoads Hendrix Van Halen situation?

ive mostly left the pirates life behind me, so im largely limiting myself to free streaming, but here's a few ive watched lately that i feel are worth checking out or revisiting Luz (2019)
Hagazussa i'll add more as i think of em if you're having a girl over, put on The Love Witch, or Perfume: story of a murderer Do you mean the one by Tilman Singer? I think that came out in 2018 already. Luz and Hagazussa are definitely underrated favorites of mine.

Haven't made a list yet but started October with "Bodies, Bodies, Bodies" last night and thought it was a lot of fun.

I'm just trying to move him on from the Zootopia stage because he's never had anybody in his life actively try to move him on from the kid stuff. Halloween season seems like the perfect time to start. Edit: Also, his mom is the one shooting this down.

My son is 9 and has started to express that scary movies and things might be too intense for him -- which I totally understand. I was a major wimp regarding scary movies for a long time, but it came back with a vengeance around 12/13 years old.
Is there a chance that he just doesn't like "old" movies? If not, I think Jaws is a great first scary movie. It's more of an adventure movie thanks to Spielberg, but you still get a monster and a little bit of blood without being crazy intense. Some other good options could be Gremlins or Poltergeist. Gremlins is a horror movie, but it blends comedy pretty well while still being scary for kids. And then Poltergeist has a young kid that would be easy to relate to, but has some genuinely scary moments.
Also, I started my Halloween Horror binge over the weekend with Insidious. I thought the first half was just blah, but it was great when it picked up in the second half. They did a great job with the practical effects -- some of it was a little cheesy, but they were obviously dealing with limitations. That could be a good first horror movie too if he'd prefer something more recent.

I think I tried showing him Jaws years back and it didn't work out too well due to not being interested. The only live action movies I've ever seen him take to are Home Alone I and II. I just don't get it because my mom showed me things like Jaws and Poltergeist when I was still in elementary school and I loved that shit, even though it messed me up from time to time. I genuinely wonder if the zoomer generation has been mostly conditioned to reject all things that isn't some dumbass on YouTube doing challenges or whatever.

Anyways, makes me sad that parents these days aren’t giving their kids enough credit to be able to handle scary movies. Everyone I grew up with had seen at least a few classics like the shining and Halloween by age 12.

I honestly can’t remember a time where my parents were like “you cannot watch this”
I was renting robocop, terminator, Halloween etc when I was like 7/8 and they were just always cool with it. They wouldn’t watch that kinda stuff with me so maybe they just didn’t realize. One time I rented toxic avenger thinkin it would be like the cartoon and that was probably the biggest dropping of the ball my mom ever made. My 8 year old mind/eyes were not ready for troma content yet lol. Regardless I thank them for never filtering what I watch. I turned out weird but I would have anyway.
Always made it extra lame when you’d go to another kids house and they would only be able to watch G rated shit. MAYBE a PG one on the weekend.

Are we raising kids to be too soft these days or was I raised poorly? I had a similar stretch with the step-kids. Softness with gore wasn’t such a big problem. They loved the paranormal activities and the ring more than I thought they would compared more to the classics like a Poltergeist. When they got a little older (like 15 or 16) I was more worried about showing them something with like a suicide in it than a bush with how much them and all their friends talk about their mental illnesses none stop. Once they hit 17 it became who cares watch whatever. Last week youngest step daughter asked if I’ve heard of the Hills Have Eyes and I just said “yup maybe look into what that one’s about a bit before you start it”.

I had watched most of the big horror movies (Halloween, Elm St, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play) by the time I was 7/8 years old. The only one that freaked my out at the time was Child’s Play for whatever reason. I don’t remember ever being scared of the other ones. My neighbor in NJ had all of them on VHS so we used to watch them after school or at sleepovers. Good times!

Also, I started my Halloween Horror binge over the weekend with Insidious. I thought the first half was just blah, but it was great when it picked up in the second half. i have opposite feelings, except maybe the third act, not the whole second half. i rewatched recently for the first time in 10+ years, and besides dad's acting, i love the first half. the jump scares are effective, the subtle things like the kid ghost with his nose in the corner are great, the comedic duo are great, and showing off their equipment is interesting and very well-shot. there's a lot there to love ...but as soon as dad steps through the red door, the vaudevillian masquerade puppeteer dungeon lair loses me big time. the demon design and the cgi effects they used are horrible even by 2010 standards.

I remember when my mom introduced me into horror films when I was 8, she showed me Halloween 1 and 2 back to back. Also showed me When a Stranger Calls. Told me about the other big names, she wouldn't let me watch A Nightmare of Elm Street for another couple years, but the one she absolutely wouldn't let me watch was The Exorcist. So that hyped it up for me and I saw it when I was 11, but I didn't like it at all at the time as I also wasn't raised in a religious setting, but I ended up rewatching it a few years later and finally appreciating it.

Just caught an early showing of The Exorcist: Believer and I gotta say it is good. Comparing it to the original is a fool’s errand and obviously should not be done, but what we have here is a moody, creepy horror film with just enough callbacks to the og to tie them together without just being basically a remake of that film. It is its own thing. Some cool 1970s style static and slow zoom establishing shots with no score really set the tone from the start. There’s some clunky dialogue and line delivery here and there but just about every horror film from the 70s and 80s has this as well so it could have even been intentional. Go see it!
edit: just learned that this is apparently a jumping off point for an Exorcist trilogy. If it was just a one and done sequel that you watch and enjoy then fine but I’m def not on board for two more. Why they have so much faith in DGG is beyond me. This movie would have been much better with a different director. ^^ no spoilers, just some quick right out of the theater thoughts.

Watched Terminator 2 by myself at 7 and that kitchen scene when the stepdad gets knifed while drinking milk kinda fucked me up for a bit. Luckily, I had a friend whose whole family was into horror. I remember they showed me April Fools Day because they knew most of the murders were just practical jokes in the movie. It helped break me of my wuss tendencies and I still thank them for it.
Next up on the October movie list is Haxan, which has been pretty good so far. It's great to know that people's horniness hasn't really changed in 100+ years.

Saw some good reviews on the new VHS film so I might check it out. They kinda dropped in quality after VHS 2. The one short set in Indonesia with the cult was one of my favorite short horror films of all time.
