Longlegs. Caught it yesterday. One of those movies where the hype hurts it because while it may get asses in seats, it sets such an impossible standard. I found it to be pretty decent, though, not a home run. It's unsettling, but not scary. Perkins know how to craft a mood and excels at dread. This is a feel bad flick where you feel it in the pit of your stomach. The comparisons to Silence of the Lambs, Zodiac, Prisoners, Se7en etc are all apt because the tone is similar, the focus involves a killer and, the plot is solving a mystery. Everything is pretty effective, but it's not as bulletproof as the aforementioned films when prodding for plot holes and motivations. Another movie it kind of reminded me of is Sinister, which isn't a bad thing. But I don't get the Cage worship here. He's unrecognizable and it seems like any competent actor could have delivered that role honestly. And I like Cage, but nothing about his portrayal felt especially electric. Maybe expectations were too high there as well. Maika Monroe is solid, but her character is low energy so not much of a standout. Probably the point as it matches the lethargic pace and gloomy atmosphere. By contrast Blair Underwood and Kieran Shipka were both charismatic. Worth seeing for sure and it will probably scratch the itch for something dark and psychological, though a tempered expectation will help.

I fully agree with your take, my dude. Film thread is full of detractors but the truth lies in the middle with this one. If this was a blind watch on Shudder or a Blockbuster dvd whim you’d walk away fully pleased and stoked to recommend it to others. The marketing and hype really did a disservice here but in the end it did get butts in the seats. It’ll make money and keep Osgood making movies, which I’ll eagerly watch

I'm surprised there hasn't been more Lou Reed / Marc Bolan talk about Longlegs' look / inspiration.

Disappointed Cage played it the way he did, but that's just Cage for ya - and people were laughing as soon as he appeared onscreen. Started strong, but after my mate saw it and gushed over how genuinely scary it was, all I could think of was "this is only ok" as it progressed. Technically great, especially the sound, but not a lot under the surface really.

wen't and saw Oddity last night and really enjoyed it. Caveat was plenty creepy, and the director took those strengths and applied its creepiness here on a larger scale. It felt as original as horror can feel these days and tapped into that appeal that drew to these things as a child in the first place.

Joe Bob is doing a 6 movie marathon next Friday. That's pretty cool, but I've been enjoying the 1 movie a week format since I usually pass out by the end of it.

Enjoyed Strange Darling. Best to go in completely blind. Not exactly horror, but very much genre thriller with violence and gore.

I fuckin LOVED longlegs. Saw a lot of shit talk, like people legit saying it was a piece of shit and a complete waste of time, so I didn't know what to expect. But I loved the whole thing. Vibes were seriously fucked, and I loved how evil it was. Shit all the way rocked.

I also loved Longlegs. Could never live up to the hype but it was a great throwback to the 90s serial killer genre for me

I don't even know if this is considered a horror movie but Trap was top 5 worst movie I have ever seen in my life. M Night Shyamalan is an absolute hack

M Night Shyamalan is an absolute hack i've seen a few of his movies and i don't know why i even bother. split was only good cuz of mcavoy's amazing performance. sixth sense, unbreakable and that last one with the cabin at the end of the world... nah, no good.

I thought he was building up a good head of steam with Old and Knock At the Cabin. Dave Bautista's performance really elevates Knock. Without him I dont think it works as much. If you're at all into Split or Unbreakable its worth checking out Glass just to see how he attempts to tie it all together...which he doesn't do well imo. Still havent seen Trap but he's got some interesting stuff going on and it at least makes me wanna check out his stuff as opposed to his mid-career pile of shit that I will never touch (The Happening, Last Airbender, Lady in the Water, After Earth.)

I liked Sixth Sense, but I hated Split and the few other films I’ve seen of his. I really have no interest in watching anything else he puts out

I like maybe 3 or 4 of his movies, but most of them are pretty bad. This one takes the cake though. And it felt like he's just promoting his daughters singing career with a half ass story behind it. None of it makes any sense whatsoever and i felt insulted with how stupid everything was

I thought Josh was really good in it. Such a shame he was wasted in it.
Zero expectations from M and I'll continue to watch that garbage.

The focus on the daughter as an actual concert movie was some big time nepo shit. Then having her be a main protagonist who fucking suckkkkked at acting made it so much worse.

There's literally like 6 full song performances that just completely stop the flow of the movie for no reason other than him saying "here look at my daughter sing"
