I used to just dig around the late 90s internet for stories and weird behind the scenes info about the production of Return of the Living Dead. Lol. ROTLD will always be my favorite horror flick, without question. After the Savini remake of Night, ROTLD was just… the definitive zombie flick to me. The dumb humor and bad line reads seemed much more obvious when I was younger, I think, because I watch it now and a lot of that stuff is just so indicative of that era of 80s low-to-mid budget movie making. It’s part of the charm lol. I love that they inexplicably hint at Ernie being a Nazi for absolutely zero plot service whatsoever. I love how the ending could either be the most horrifying indictment on nuclear arms + Reagan era politics… OR the laziest, most rushed piece of shit you’ve ever seen. It rides 100% on what kind of person you are, really. It’s one of those movies that just fucking lands, regardless of who you show it to. I’ve gotten sooo many roommates and girlfriends and old bandmates into horror explicitly THROUGH Return of the Living Dead. It just checks all the boxes.

I only just saw ROTLD last year and it blew my mind. The best old school zombie flick for sure.

Old and must-not-miss: Night of the Living Dead Dawn of the Dead Day of the Dead Return of the Living Dead
Old, not exactly legendary or particularly great, but still important and super enjoyable: Return of the Living Dead II Night of the Living Dead (Savini remake) Zombi 2
Not old not new, but important: 28 Days Later 28 Weeks Later Shaun of the Dead
Not old not new, still worth seeing: Land of the Dead
Newish: The Night Eats the World Train to Busan
I’m sure I’ll get my shit blown up because I’m leaving out stuff.

Yeah this covers some top tier stuff. Ravenous, the French Canadian movie from 2017, is pretty strong as well. Maybe almost Night Eats the World level.

Barbara Crampton has a crazy body of work in her older years compared to every other c-lister (not a pejorative term). So many others have slummed it I for the paycheck, but she continues to get really cool work.

I remember seeing land of the dead in highschool and having fun in the theatre, but havent ever revisited. I'm sure it's not nearly as fun at home 20 years later

I'm sure it's not nearly as fun at home 20 years later People trash talk it but I think it’s really good. Certainly the hardest a Romero zombie movie has worked to establish a fun stable of characters, and they all do good work. Pretty easy to forget there were two more films in the franchise after that. They suck.

Y’all seen There’s Always Vanilla and Season of the Witch? Interesting to see Romero trying to get away from horror genre and schlocky stuff early on, then immediately doing a course correction, I assume cuz the horror he ended up doing was what could get funded. There’s Always Vanilla is a zeitgeist-y character piece but without much to say. Season of the Witch is a domestic drama, a sort of dejected and in the suburbs thing. I wanna say I watched them like 20 years ago, but I think they’re worth seeing for devotees.

And then The Crazies. Man, I love Romero. Definitely not the most talented horror filmmaker in terms of technical ability, storytelling or dealing with themes or subtext, but his stuff just feels “right.”
The Crazies remake seems kinda forgotten at this point but it’s also really good. Timothy Olyphant just had Deadwood and being a Die Hard baddie to his name for the average moviegoer, but watching The Crazies you knew guy was a star.
Now I gotta talk Olyphant a little more. Great death in Dreamcatcher. He wasn’t given much to work with in Scream 2. His body is insane this close to 60, must be really rigid with his diet.

Watched happy birthday to me last night and thought it was doing way too much. Like, the whole movie was just like, ridiculous in how it tried to keep you on your toes and surprise you. By the end I was literally rolling my eyes.

How many people do I know in real life who actually care about movies, let alone horror? Not that I try to proselytize out in the wild, but they don’t really get how someone is actually invested in this sort of thing, emotionally. But this shit matters to me, like few things do, and I think it’s beautiful.

But this shit matters to me, like few things do, and I think it’s beautiful. I feel this. I have only one friend who appreciates and cares about film (and yes horror) the way I do and appreciate that more than they’ll ever know. I have formative memories as a toddler wandering down the hallway while my dad watched Aliens on TV sneaking a simultaneously fascinated and horrified peak and also being the only one awake in my entire family as the credits rolled for 2001: A Space Odyssey on VHS from Blockbuster. This has been and always will be a lifelong passion. Movies rock
