double reverse plot twist I'll be at 50k saved in about a year
Parents paid my tuition (they're super middle class - father/military mother/pre-k teacher) which I am forever grateful for. Have expenses amounting to about 1.2k a month for the past two years. Unfortunately, I work for the government but was lucky in that six months of my first year on the job was schooling on the other side of the country that included a decent monthly per diem and no way to spend any of what I was making. I buy records and comics pretty frequently, but I also don't spend a lot on food and none on alcohol or any other outside expense. So I have some caveats for sure, and I hate being the "well actually" person, but it's not impossible.

So basically if your parents pay for you and the military spends too much money on you then you can make it. lol. That's literally how that paragraph reads.

You can make it! As long as you don't live in this huge list of cities or pay for college or anything you'd have fun doing.
I'm busting your balls, but fugg....

I could probably save money if I took my celery and transferred to a flyover state, I'm just way too comfortable where I am and likely paying way too much for a place that would be $800 or so ninety minutes from here.

I mean, what's the façade of middle class? When I was a kid my mom worked at Applebees. We lived in a trailer for a while. She got a degree in her late thirties and started teaching kids at a church school that definitely doesn't pay well. Is one of those jobs considered more middle class than the other even if there probably isn't much of a difference in pay?

It's not the military, but that doesn't matter much. Main thing to take away is that I don't spend much money outside of expenses.

Im in the same situation. I don’t want to move now but I’d like to retire somewhere in the Midwest or somewhere I can buy a decent house fairly cheap. I have family in Indiana and they enjoy it other than the occasional tornado.

That's life insurance money and I was being facetious. Most importantly is that I'm mainly just fucking around while killing time at work

I'm a fucking idiot and decided to go to graduate school to pursue a PhD, so I'm probably never going to have 50k in savings.

I mean, if we were a civilized society who had a collective interest in doing the morally right thing like providing healthcare and free education, that'd be sweet... But we're not. Like the well adjusted society we are, we tie it to a generation that's seen as an entitled mass of whiners instead of the precariat debt peons they are. Maybe their parents were middle class but oops, they had their life savings blown away because of a bunch of criminal speculators decided to gamble on the hopes and dreams of a generation that just missed the boat. They still gotta go get that college degree though. It's too bad their small little towns got hollowed out 25 years ago and Mike Rowe didn't do his "just become a plumber" TED Talk a few years earlier. SO New York or San Francisco? They gotta go to one of the cities to play the meritocracy roulette. Oh, and while they're there, God forbid in-between the weekly existential crises about finances they go out to eat. And they definitely shouldn't blow through six months of savings to go to Europe for a week, but they gotta. Because everyone else their age is doing it. Because that's all they see on Instagram because everyone is happy and definitely not hiding they're also part of the anxiety riddled depressed generation of "whiners." Maybe they'll post some pictures of some premium-mediocre bullshit they bought on their night out because they're happy and doing good too! Or you know what's easier? Just have rich parents...

I made almost $40k in one shot fishing in Alaska. 4 months of pure hell, and you come out with a chunk of savings. So, thats an option if anyone is interested.

My city along with a nonprofit bought up unowned plots to become community gardens to provide produce for the city and the schools but also jobs for students. Boston is getting insanely expensive so they sold all the plots for the luxury apartments starting at $2,400 for a 1 BR are coming in. The condos going up start at $350,000.
None of these people work here, eat here or shop here. They all go in and out of Boston.
All of the buildings going up are tax abated for 25 years, so in the last year, we've implemented a meals tax, a garbage collection surcharge and closed 2 fire stations. We lost our state funding to rebuild 2 middle schools because the ballot vote to raise property taxes failed.
Family restaurants that have been here since the 1940's are closing down and selling the property while the money is good.
I'm glad the "fuck you, I got mine" mentality is working for some but fuck off when hundreds year old communities are dying and forcing people out to make up for it.

There's also the question of what's your quality of life like if your only goal is to save as much as possible?
We're all young and hopefully healthy. Would anyone really even want to sacrifice years of their life just to save an arbitrary amount of money even if that were an option? I'd rather enjoy myself as much as I can while I still have the health and energy to do so.

This saving money conversation money is funny to me because despite being only 27, i've still never made a wage that even enabled me to think about getting out from under my student debt in my lifetime, let alone retiring, or saving an emergency fund or whatever. Notwithstanding having a little bit of fun money. But hey, middle class aspirations.

Personally the peace of mind I get from saving outweighs any satisfaction I would get from having an expensive car or whatever. I don't feel like I sacrifice anything that would really satisfy me. I just know how to cook reasonably well and try not to buy status markers and stuff I don't really need.

It's easy to save money when you have time to cook/meal prep, don't go out to movies, bars, shows, games, vacations, etc. but most people grow up understanding college years/20's are for fun, experiencing life. Our system decided to throw that idea out the window with the social contract we ripped up before they were born.
That's why I don't blame kids today for blowing through their money trying to live life "authentically" or "to the fullest". How many dudes do you know spend their nights gaming and buying DLC just to escape it all? Most people 20-35 know there's no safety net or retirement for them. Why not live it up? This generation knows the world in 2050 is fucked and there is no future. They're playing the part.
It's actually incredibly sad with younger kids just getting into their 20's. Almost everyone in that age group is incredibly atomized, stressed out and just wants an escape.
Everyone has thrown out the idea that we're in this together and we're all on our own figuring it out.
