That's exactly my point. I couldn't save a significant amount of money even if I wanted to. I can afford to support myself and not really have to stress too much. I'd rather take what little disposable income I do have and try to enjoy myself

I'm not trying to be hyperbolic but people have no idea how fucked we are with climate change. We crossed the Rubicon and it's infuriating seeing isolated individualistic "look out for yourself" attitudes ramping up as the window closes.
It's mass disavowal. All the institutions we had to mitigate all of these problems failed. What will fill that vacuum isn't some 2-4 year electoral switch. The global consensus is already breaking down and countries around the world are isolating themselves and looking out for their own interests.
I'll link to the most conservative IPCC and NOAA sea level rise projections where the entire global coast line pushes 1.5 billion people inland... The EU couldn't handle 1 million Syrian refugees without dissolving rapidly.
Every day I wish I never majored in this shit or at least be able to turn off whatever switch it is in the brain to stop caring. It's like watching a slow motion car wreck all around you and we're all fiddling on our own roofs.

I don't make anywhere near 50k but my one friend who does is probably taking home about 42k after insurance and withholding. He pays 1k in rent, about 150 for utilities, 400 for student loans, probably like 300 for his car and insurance, 100 for his phone and conservatively 150 per week (7800 per year) in food and gas. That would leave him with about 900 per month leftover after his fixed expenses. Obviously his student loans are what's hindering him to some degree but that's certainly not atypical.
He's not living in poverty but he enjoys going out to bars and shows and and smoking dense nuggs of fat buds and video games. If he prioritized saving money he'd be bored and miserable.

Ok, so he doesn't prioritize saving. If he did some of those expenses could be cut. But yeah, you're not saving $50k in 5 years when you're paying $4800 p/a in student loans. Nonetheless it is possible to save a decent sum of money and let it compound if that's what you want to do.
I'm also not saying that people who make significantly less than $50k can save $50k, or that student loans are fair, or that you shouldn't live life 2 the max in your 20s, or that global warming isn't an issue, or that seangp's boss compensates him fairly, or that the WSJ should've endorsed Jair Bolsonaro for president of Brazil. This thread is a broken record thanks to the same handful of people.

Im not saying "fuck the climate" or whatever, but earth is a self regulating system. If humans push it, it will bite back....and it is. That's just how evolution works. And its happened many times throughout our planetary history. So...humans fuck up, nature strikes back, and we aren't the dominant species anymore. Whats the issue there? Humanity is trimmed down because we fucked ourselves with our own ignorance...so? I'm failing to see the issue. |
