Hey smarties, I got a question: Should governments (perhaps local but probably state) limit the amount of square footage that an individual can own (corporations would also be under similar restrictions)? If so, how much is enough to own and allow a comfortable life without being too generous for properties with oversized lawns or three-headed families from owning houses with over 2k sqft (not including yards)? Thanks! If that's a problem, then you have to say these elite neighborhoods that love zoning laws need to live by same standard. I get it I love old architecture but we can build not old school soviet blocks and house the poor. Also as for homeless populations some of ot has to do with the end of single room occupancy places. Doesn't mean they need to be shitholes, but you need place that's dirt cheap to get back on your feet.

God knew that I’d be too powerful if he gave me the ability to exercise restraint personally glad he gave me the strength to put you on ignore. But I have so many impressive insights to share. For example, instead of abstracting private sector innovations from their conditions (and ignoring the insane amount of waste and everything else, we could look at public sector innovations instead. I think what Minnesota has accomplished with GIS should be of far greater interest to leftists.

It is affordable. It exists already. the federal government has provided substantial funding, especially recently. The federal government is barely a problem in this regard. State government typically is, especially in states that typically have Republican control of the governorship and statehouse. Various boards and neighborhood associations are also the obstacle. This is part of the reason why Project 2025 is so bad, because it changes the definition of public transit and explicitly prevents USDOT from providing grant money to city and county agencies.

Speaking of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles, Automated Bus Rapid Transit (ABRT) is much more achievable and practical than self-driving private automobiles. It has also performed much better in tests, and bus drivers were really enthusiastic about some of the features provided by autonomous innovations. Narc, how are we feeling about the supposed expansion of the LA mass transit system ahead of the Olympics in 2028? Pipe dream? Think it'll be temporary or long lasting infrastructure improvement? Will LA mass transit continue to be a statewide inside joke?

Trump and company successfully shifted the Overton window on immigration policy. Probably an indication that it would be bad if he were president again.

Narc, how are we feeling about the supposed expansion of the LA mass transit system ahead of the Olympics in 2028? Pipe dream? Think it'll be temporary or long lasting infrastructure improvement? Will LA mass transit continue to be a statewide inside joke? I think substantial improvements have been made. The expansion is happening -- LA Metro (which is a county-level agency) is building more than any other agency in the country right now. I guess LA Metro is at least claiming they're going to pull it off, but I have no idea what the discussions are like within the agency. The amount of difficulty LA Metro faces when it comes to just building a single heavy rail line is immense. There's a million different ideas for various bus rapid transit lines, but if one fucking "city" on the proposed route says no, you're up shit creek without a paddle. If the City of Long Beach and the City of Los Angeles had their way, you'd probably see a whole hell of a lot more service between the two cities. You look at the A line and it's just like... Yeah, it is the longest light rail line in the world. In a bad way. In an ideal world, it would be grade-separated in more areas. Part of the problem is that I would think we would need coordination between a massive number of agencies to pull it off. There are a shit ton of transit agencies in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. LA Metro (and maybe LA DOT as welll) have succeeded in implementing dedicated bus lanes and all that, they're switching to an inhouse safety system, and there's the ambassador program that has also been implemented. But there's a national frontline workforce shortage and it's pretty bad for some agencies in LA County. No matter how much capital comes in, that's going to be a challenge. And then the demand for zero emissions... that's going to require federal money. It's a classic example of the political class making demands of the public sector without the financial support, workforce development, and legal reform necessary to do it. But maybe they'll pull it off anyway.

LA is one of the best places for a light/elevated rail network in the country: the weather is good enough, the population is dense enough, the streets are wide enough, and demand is there.

LA is one of the best places for a light/elevated rail network in the country: the weather is good enough, the population is dense enough, the streets are wide enough, and demand is there. Yeah, progress is being made, but it's tough. And it gets extremely frustrating. For example, AB 60 allows undocumented immigrants to get a driver's license. Seems fine and good on the surface. But LA Metro (and other agencies) lost ridership because of this, and neighborhood composition changed, etc. Areas which had great service and high ridership now have insane parking situations and worse congestion. Making up for that loss of ridership has been difficult. But, the big, big problem is definitely the fragmentation of governance and the immense power of some asshole city council member or neighborhood association. And operations. CA has dumped lots of money into capital projects, but its operations that need a kickstart. You gotta have the workers to provide the service, and LA/OC/Ventura do not. Positive recent developments: Nieves, Alex. “How Unions Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Crosswalks.” POLITICO, August 26, 2024. www.politico.com/newsletters/california-climate/2024/08/26/how-unions-stopped-worrying-and-learned-to-love-crosswalks-00176391. hahn.lacounty.gov/federal-transit-authority-greenlights-funding-for-southeast-gateway-line/

America is a shithole country. The will of the people is pretty ducking awful. Boomers can't die soon enough. A generation of males raised on video games, Andrew Tate, and Kermit the Frog Peterson, is about to start voting. Boomer die-off is not going to save us and we are doomed as long as the internet exists and large, disaffected swaths of the population become increasingly downwardly mobile.
