I also think on the surface just being a woman swayed voters as fucking stupid as it is, it's true. This country is nowhere near as progressive as anyone thinks it is. The fact that an 80 year old (rich) white dude with a rap(e) sheet was preferred over a women should say it all. |

There was that big poll last month about how the public sees the candidates. The percentage who thought she wasn’t progressive or left enough was laughingly small. That’s hard to accept on board, where posters are further to the left than most people. The prescription to run on more left things—or just things that can be characterized as leftwing—is almost certainly a losing one. We’re probably firmly in the “I’m gonna give you all of this…and with no tradeoffs!!!” era. That’s really hard to sell unless you’re Trump. With running on more leftwing issues, I think it’s just easier for voters to recognize that there are tradeoffs. I dunno, it’s not an enviable spot to be in. I don’t see how appealing to the heart with the plight of Palestinians works on the national level when appealing to heart on undocumented immigrants is a losing argument. except no cause biden won running on canceling student debt raising the minimum wage etc all left things that are very popular among most voters. problem is he didn’t follow through on any of them. so it goes back to “the do nothing democrats are liars might as well vote for trump if he’s promising cheaper gas” The student debt thing hurt dems and they won’t be going down that road again. Something that doesn’t survive for long once out in open air in our current media environment. Very easy to attack, and attacked it was. |

The problem with that (or any) poll is that people’s understanding of what “left” or “progressive” mean is entirely culture war bullshit: they think it means blue-haired trans zoomers grooming their kids, or letting millions of rapists carrying fentanyl flood into the country. Most of this faulty perception is caused by the media that they consume: cable news and Facebook, etc, obviously. But a lot of it is driven by corporate DEI initiatives and decisions made in boardrooms and c-suite offices. I was talking to a friend of mine who I consider pretty intelligent (smarter than me anyway), and he insisted that the Democrats have veered far to the left in our lifetimes. When I explained to him how they have moved steadily rightward, just a step behind the GOP, since Carter, he said, “oh, I agree, I meant more like woke stuff.” And I realized this is a function seeing a gay couple in an insurance commercial, or a diverse cast in the latest superhero slop, etc., having virtually nothing to do with stuff the Democrats do in office. And they offer no counter-narrative or affirmative messaging because doing so would highlight the fact that there is no philosophical or ideological difference between them and the republicans with regard to trade, taxes, and the welfare state. The Democrats will continue to cede ground to the GOP on every issue, and voters will rightfully continue to view them as rudderless and weak. It doesn’t matter how many heinous border security bills they put forth, or how many Bush administration endorsements they get. |

Most post-covid incumbents lost globally. Biden admin was farther to the left on many areas than any other president since the 1960s and 70s. I think people are stupid, but campaigning on going even farther left would’ve prolly been successful cuz it excites people. I’m not convinced that more forcefully denouncing Israel would’ve been successful, but I think they should have done it simply because it’s the right thing to do.
