As far as I can tell the key to finally understanding politics/the world and going conservative is getting "rich" or age-related cognitive decline. Ideally both.
or racism

When this topic comes up with my parents or anyone in their generation it yields a lot of “yeah but... things were still expensive back then, you still had to work hard, etc” totally missing the point.

I have no idea what kind of celery range that is nor the cost of living in NJ. I’m in Southern California with the ridiculous cost of living, so my view is probably pretty skewed.

Keep in mind, my mom didn't start working until he became disabled in like 08/09

Is this the part where people start implying that "dadmeat" must have been in the mafia?
My parents both worked 8-12 hours a day at non-union office jobs when I was a kid. Our next door neighbors had one of those extra-angular '80s-style houses with glass tables and zebra print rugs everywhere. The husband had truck routes that he drove for Coca Cola and Boar's Head 8 hours a day while his wife, who never had to work, let us swim in their in-ground pool because, surprise, we didn't have one.
When they asked everyone in my class to draw what they wanted to be when they grew up, I drew myself as a Coca Cola truck driver. Of course, the teachers thought I was crazier than the kids who said astronauts or princesses.
My neighbor wasn't in the mafia. He was just in a union. And he worked so hard that he had a stroke at 45 and couldn't even remember his own daughters' names. But he still had his union pension at that point, while my parents worked well into their 60s and came very close to getting nothing for it.
Edit: that last part sounds bad, obviously nobody should work until they have a stroke... it's just something that blew my mind as a 13 year old

I don't know about union carpentry specifically, but I know Con Ed linemen and union welders who easily clear $100k in NY with no college. You can do the same with MTA. Those jobs still exist, there's just a social stigma now for whatever reason.

I just watched the Arbery video. Jesus fucking christ. Like I'm just sitting here seething with anger. Those fat fuck country bumpkins need to be jailed for life and their bloodlines neutered but instead they will get a slap on the wrist. Just good 'ol boys who made a mistake.
I swear to god a lot of "rural folk" fantasize being the guys who shoot Ben at the end of Night of the Living Dead.

When I had a union job my family, who in many cases didn't graduate high school and comfortably provided for their families on union jobs, pressured me to go back to college and eventually to law school. When I became a lawyer it was like the sun shone on me and they couldn't stop talking about it, even though I would've been in basically the same financial position if I were driving for UPS or working for the Port Authority. It really frustrates me that we've run down working people to the point where they've lost pride in their work and think white collar workers are somehow better than them.

The old fat redneck worked with the DA office and two others had to recuse themselves due to COI and are trying to persuade others to not press charges. This shooting happened on Feb 23rd and it was obviously an ambush. No one has been arrested yet. It's the same ole story.

I'd think they do something now because people in that town have nothing to do right now but be angry after the video. I'm not advocating for their murder but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended in more.
