Chinese government is issuing bonds, a hallmark of bourgeois dictatorship!!! Hasn't China been issuing foreign currency bonds to help local governments that are hurting for cash for a few months now?

If you can find it, I recommend the book "Late Marx and the Russian Road" edited by Teodor Shanin which discusses Marx's studies of the Russian peasant milieu in the last decade or so of his life. It is centered around some drafts of a letter that Marx wrote to a Russian revolutionary Vera Zasulich. Marx sounds almost like a Narodnik in these. There is also some stuff with a Kropotkin anarcho-communist type of flavour as well. Very interesting stuff. (I think most of the authors in the book takes shots at Althusser which I always enjoy too.) www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1881/zasulich/index.htm

Actually doin the Das Kapital reading group. Seems pretty good, and it’s the kind of thing you really ought to read if you ever find a chance to do it. Very early into it, just prefaces and postfaces. I get why the commodity form stuff at the beginning is difficult, and I think that someone else trying to understand it better would benefit a lot from looking at some of the well written shorter books on Hegel or German Idealism written by Americans like Pippin or Pinkard.
I dipped my toes into process ontology in grad school, and it seems worth it to read Marx in light of that. And also I am really slowly making my way through Tocqueville’s Democracy In America, and Tocqueville and Marx are two of the major figures in modern historiography so it seemed like a good pair.

I am doing this as well. Just by myself no group. I have read enough secondary literature to be able to make sense of it. What translation do you have? I decided to keep using MECW (Vol. 35) which is the old Aveling and Moore translation. I am sure it is inferior to Fowkes but since I already read Vols. 3 and 5 last year I thought I might as well just keep going with it. I am on Chapter 10 "The Working Day" which is definitely a highlight. I particularly enjoyed this footnote from Hegel (pp. 268-269): "In our reflecting and reasoning age a man is not worth much who cannot give a good reason for everything, no matter how bad or crazy. Everything in the world that has been done wrong has been done wrong for the very best of reasons"

Yes, you must. You're lucky he didn't get to finish them. And guess what? You'll have to read Economic Manuscripts, which is basically Vol. 4. Good luck, comrade.

Schumpeter says "There is no point whatever in perusing selected bits of Marx’s writings or even in perusing the first volume of Das Kapital alone. Any economist who wishes to study Marx at all must resign himself to reading carefully the whole of the three volumes of Das Kapital and of the three volumes of Theorien über den Mehrwert." These are volumes 30-37 (!) of the MECW.

Pinkard’s book on the history of German Idealism and its aftermath was really foundational for me. The Platypus person I know little about, really, but his website is very good.

What are you interested in? Zizek is okay, he gets shit on way too hard by his detractors but his best books have this weird quality of being interesting while you read them and easily forgotten afterwards. He’s not the best introduction to anything he writes about in a more scholarly vain, and his writing definitely has some of worst traits of 20th century high “continental” philosophy. I’ve read parts of Less Than Nothing and all of the Sublime Object of Ideology. Adrian Johnston is better on Zizek than Zizek.
