Tell me about your house plants. I don’t know much but I have a few babies I’m taking care of. My monstera has two new leaves in the past two weeks.

I have a parlor palm, an umbrella dwarf tree, a few others which I have no idea what they are. I took the parlor palm knowing it was fucked up, tons of brown spots all over it. I trimmed about half of it back down to the stem and it's doing great. Got about 5 or 6 new growth coming in. The umbrella tree is growing like crazy.

I'd call my entire apartment low light. The umbrella tree and parlor palm are loving it. I basically just picked from the houseplant section at this local chain. They've got everything all divided up already.

A friend wen't to Thailand and met a connect for Thai constellations. She’s sending one and a plant has never made me so excited or concerned

I helped move my friend a few weeks ago and he has the most perfect two windows for house plants. Dude could put two awesome shelves up and the place would look amazing. Too bad he doesn't want to. Nerd!

I’ll have to ask my gf for the names of most of them, but we have a god damn shit ton of em in our apartment.
I have a pretty chill cactus and Aloe plant on the table where I’ve been working from home since Covid, and it’s been cool hanging out watching em grow

Anyone have a bonsai? I think they would be kind of dope. I saw a jade plant that other day in an atrium that was legit three feet tall. Like if you Google “biggest jade plant” it was almost that big

House plants are tight. I wish I had better light in my place and that I could remember the names of any of my plants (I can only remember the calathea, which is the first one I bought.)

I have a basic torch cactus and Madagascar palm. I like hitting up cactus farms when I travel to desert regions but my apartment light kind of sucks. Current plant wish list: Myrtle Cactus Monkey Tail Cactus Euphorbia Aeruginosa

i bought my mother in law's tongue about six years ago and they can sometimes live up to ten years inside, but mine is now on it's last legs. conversely, my rubber fig and bird of paradise purchased around the same time are absolutely thriving (the latter is notoriously difficult to keep alive indoors, particularly for such a long stretch of time). it'll be a bummer to give them up when i move interstate, so i need to make sure they go to a good home.
from memory, the only thing i've killed myself is a calathea and (surprisingly) a parlor palm. the palm sat on my desk at work and was chronically overwatered by everyone in my vicinity, so the blood isn't entirely on my hands.
edit: i'm also really good at caring for orchids.

very glad to see this thread appear because i need recs for house plants for insanely low light apartments. i get almost no direct natural light but i'm still looking to turn this black thumb green. maybe try a zz plant or Sansevieria (snake plant). we have a ton of house plants but these two are without a doubt the most hardy. they're both fine with indirect light and not being watered for weeks at a time.

There's a giant Aloe plant in the spare bedroom that our next door neighbors, who are very into decorative plants, gave us when we moved in. It's fine I guess. I don't think you need to do anything for Aloe plants, I think they just live forever no matter what.
Over the past few years my wife has brought in a few house plants, but she never waters them and I don't care about them because they're not edible, so they died.
Like 2 years ago, I think, my sister gave us a little prickly pear pad that I guess we were supposed to plant, but she gave it to us wrapped in like a plastic Safeway bag, so I'd forget what the hell it was. Over the course of a few weeks I picked up the bag and moved from surface to surface like 5 or 6 times while cleaning or organizing the living room, and every time I picked it up I would get 3 or 4 almost microscopic needles stuck in my hand, so I eventually threw the fucker away and told my sister never to bring one of those things into my house ever again. For like months later I'd occasionally brush up against a surface and get another needle stuck in me. Fuck prickly pears, go back to the desert where you belong.
